I picked up chess when a new PC I bought came pre-loaded with a chess program. Since then I've helped to start a local (amateur) chess group that meets/plays once a month at our local library. [ It's "amateur" in that we don't use time clocks, don't enforce the "touch" rule, and emphasize learning and enjoyment of the game. ] Update November 2022 : The OTB games games played at the library were suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic. Folks adapted quickly to - and enjoyed the convenience of - playing chess online.  With multiple chess sites available, there was minimal demand for OTB games, so they've not been re-started. [ On a personal note, I miss playing OTB.  If you're interested in organizing an OTB game night once a month, let me know.]
