We have now passed 50 years since The Goodies made such a big impact on British television, starting on the BBC in 1970 and continuing all the way through to 1982 through 77 episodes, though their last season was with London Weekend Television on ITV. The comedy adventures of this crazy trio, whose motto was “we do anything, any time, anywhere” made them national heroes as they also pushed boundaries, one episode focusing on apartheid. They won the Silver Rose at the Montreux TV festival in 1972 and 1975 for episodes entitled Kitten Kong and The Movies, and also parodied current pop music and had a hit with The Funky Gibbon. It is also recorded that an Englishman laughed so long and loud during one episode that he died as a result. The trio were Tim Brooke-Taylor born Buxton, Derbys 1940, who died from Covid in 2020 at his home in Cookham, Berkshire; Graeme Garden born Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire 1943, now lives in Enstone, Oxfordshire and Bill Oddie born Rochdale, Lancashire 1941, now lives in Hampstead, London; all started out in comedy as members of the renowned Cambridge University Footlights Club. They came from different backgrounds, Garden being a medical doctor, Brooke-Taylor a lawyer, and Oddie is an ornithologist and environmentalist. The filming took place at Ealing Studios, West London although popular locations were Portland, Weymouth & Bournemouth in Dorset, King’s Lynn in Norfolk and Penzance and St Ives in Cornwall. We believe the anniversary is worthy of a match in their honour and hope you accept – if the number or ratings do not suit, then please make contact.
