Recently it was the 95th anniversary of the birth of Leslie Nielsen, who died in 2010. He had an extensive career with 254 screen credits and most will remember his comedic success following Airplane ! 1980 – “Surely you can’t be serious ?” “I am serious, and don’t call me Shirley”, with Police Squad 1982 and the resulting Naked Gun films 1988, 1991, 1994, but he started out as a successful serious actor - The Virginian 1964-69, Streets of San Francisco 1973-4 and films such as The Poseidon Adventure 1972. His Forbidden Planet 1956 was an inspiration for Star Trek, and he became a lifelong Trekkie himself. He worked continuously after success and did Due South 1994-99 because his father was a Canadian Mountie, and a series of Bad Golf videos, as that was a passion. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, he was raised in Tulita in the Northwest Territories. After attending High School in Edmonton, Alberta, he became a disc jockey for a while at Calgary, Alberta radio station and a College at his school has been opened named the Leslie Nielsen School of Communications. He studied in Toronto then moved on to New York’s Neighbourhood Playhouse before achieving success. Named an honorary West Virginian in 2002, he lived between homes in Paradise Valley, Arizona and Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he passed away.
