Yesterday was the 40th anniversary of the premiere of Bette Midler's Divine Madness. The film was created from four separate concerts filmed at Pasadena's Civic Auditorium in 1979. Bette Midler became a huge star, with four Grammys, four Golden Globes, a Tony and three Emmys. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii she studied drama at the University of Hawaii but it was singing and performing which brought her success, starting in gay bathhouses with Barry Manilow playing the piano ! As she gained a recording contract - currently 15 million albums sold - she later returned to acting and studied at HB Studios in Greenwich Village, New York City. She has been in some memorable films - The Rose 1979, Outrageous Fortune 1987, Beaches 1988 and The First Wives Club 1996 and was recently on our screens in The Politician.
