On the start date it will be the 100th anniversary of the birth of Walter Matthau, who died in 2000, aged 79 after a hugely successful career. From 107 screen credits he won an Oscar for The Fortune Cookie 1966 and had two other nominations, he won a Golden Globe for The Sunshine Boys 1975 and had seven other nominations, also winning a Tony, and he won a BAFTA for Pete 'n' Tillie and Charley Varrick both in 1975 and has two other nominations. An actor who could cross drama and comedy and back again he will also be remembered for The Odd Couple 1968 and its sequel, and Grumpy Old Men 1993 and its sequel. Born on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, and raised there, his start in life was not easy, and after some time cutting timber in Montana, he seems to have found himself in WW2 when he joined the US 8th Air Force and was stationed at RAF Old Buckenham in Norfolk as a radio operator/gunner on B-24 Liberators, carrying out numerous bombing messages and surviving injuries. He found a talent for acting and the rest is history. He lived many of his later years in Santa Monica, California and is buried in Westwood Village, LA.
