The start date is the 60th anniversary of the film Spartacus, which won 4 Oscars - Best Supporting Actor, Cinematography, Art & Set Decoration and Costume Design, but although it won the Golden Globe 1961 for Best Film it was not even nominated for the Oscar for political reasons. It is now held to be one of the greatest filmed in the epic genre. Based on the true event of The Great Slave War of 73 BC, it shows the original revolt starting at a ludus or gladiator school, and of course it inspired the film Gladiator of 2000 and a lesser remake in 2004 plus a four season series 2010-13. The original film had a host of stars - Kirk Douglas in the lead as this was his own pet passion project - Laurence Olivier, Jean Simmons, Charles Laughton, Tony Curtis and Peter Ustinov, who won the Oscar. It was directed by Stanley Kubrick of 2001 and Full Metal Jacket fame and has one of the greatest lines in cinema history, when the Romans seek to identify Spartacus from captured slaves, and in turn they stand up saying "I'm Spartacus !" Outside of Universal Studios, It was filmed on location around California including the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, with its Neptune Pool, Hollywood Beach in Oxnard, the Janss Conejo Ranch in Thousand Oaks and Death Valley National Park. It was also filmed at many locations around Madrid and Guadalajara, Spain with over 8,000 serving soldiers of the Spanish Army used in the battle scenes.
