Yesterday was the 95th anniversary of the birth of Michael Conrad, who died aged 58 in 1983. Born in New York City, he served in the US Army throughout WW2 in field artillery, and gradually drifted into acting, moving to Hollywood in 1963 after beginning to make his name. From that point he was hardly off our screens, although he only had supporting roles in films from The War Lord in 1965 to a significant role in The Longest Yard 1974. He graced many a TV role and series though, crowning his career with his role as Station Sergeant Joe Esterhaus in Hill Street Blues 1981-84, for which he won two Emmys for his portrayal of the affable station lynchpin with an avuncular disposition (that could have been written by Bochco !). Especially in these times for all of us, his final words at the pre-shift roll call of "Hey - hey - hey - Let's be careful out there !" were truly memorable. We believe a match should be held in his honour and hope you will accept. If the number or rating do not suit, then please make contact
