Recently it was the 80th birthday of Elke Sommer, who originated from Germany and provided continental glamour to many British, American and Italian films of the 60s-80s. She won a Golden Globe as Most Promising Newcomer for The Prize in 1963. She is particularly remembered for Maria Gambrelli in A Shot in the Dark opposite Peter Sellers in 1963 and was the highest paid guest in the Carry On series in Carry On Behind 1975, but she appeared in Bulldog Drummond, Man from Uncle and Matt Helm films, though was surprisingly not a Bond girl. Born in Berlin, as a result of WW2 her family moved to Erlangen in Bavaria, and in her late teens she travelled to the UK to learn the language as an au pair, She then went to Italy, winning a beauty title and was discovered by Vittorio de Sica, starting in Italian films in Rome, returning to her native Bavaria for German films, to the UK at Pinewood and Borehamwood plus Luton Hoo for British films before Hollywood beckoned. She resided in Palm Springs for many years, but is now in Los Angeles and from the 1990s became a successful artist. We believe a match should be held in her honour and hope you will accept.
