Long ago we missed the 40th Anniversary of the launch of Magnum PI, the original version of course starring Tom Selleck (Magnum), John Hillerman (Higgins), Roger E Mosley (T C), Larry Manetti (Rick) & Kathleen Lloyd (Carol Baldwin), not the latest version. During its 162 episodes over 8 seasons the original won 2 Emmys for Selleck 1985 (Golden Globe same year) & Hillerman 1987 (Golden Globe 1982) and was nominated a further 15 times, as well as a further 11 GG nominations. The weekly adventures focused on a private investigator based in Hawaii and filmed mostly on Oahu and around Honolulu, the Anderson Estate in Waimanalo featuring strongly (unfortunately demolished in 2018) – this estate was originally founded close to a pond to raise green sea turtles for the Hawaiian royal family and it survives and is listed as a Historic Place. In the stories the estate was owned by Robin Masters, Magnum’s overall boss, whose voice was heard in five episodes as provided by Orson Welles. Magnum was often assisted by his fellow Vietnam veteran friends in investigations, which often featured TC’s MD500 helicopter as well as The Masters sports car collection – a Ferrari 308 GTS, an Audi 5000, a Chevrolet S10 Blazer, a Jaguar XJ and a Jeep Wagoneer. Well-known to fans are Magnum’s moustache, his Aloha shirts, Detroit Tigers baseball cap & Rolex GMT Master wristwatch and his weapon of choice was a Colt 1911 A1 .45 semi-automatic (often replaced with a 9mm as the blanks were cheaper !) whilst Higgins befitting his British antecedents had a Webley pistol, with the estate having two Dobermann guard dogs named Zeus and Apollo. The series had some well-known stars in recurring roles such as Elisha Cook Jnr & Gwen Verdon as well as other stars or soon-to-bes took part – Richard Johnson, Sharon Stone, Carol Burnett, Dana Delany, Darren McGavin, Ernest Borgnine, Richard Roundtree, Kay Lenz, Patrick Macnee, Jenny Agutter, Francesca Annis, Henry Darrow, Ted Danson, Vera Miles, Cameron Mitchell, Cesare Danova, Celeste Holm, Morgan Fairchild, Jill St John, Shannen Doherty, Sir Bruce Forsyth, Mimi Rogers, Carol Channing, Doug McClure, Dennis Weaver, Frank Sinatra, Angela Lansbury (as Jessica Fletcher), James Cromwell to name just a few. We believe the series is more than worthy of a match to celebrate the anniversary and hope you agree, so if the numbers or ratings do not suit then please make contact.
