A regular feast, in which all of the community participated, took place in the spring: for victory and success on raids and other expeditions to come in the summer. These festivals were a time for extended feasting by the whole community. Sacrificial animals were killed and eaten, and ale was drunk in honor of the gods, and in honor of departed kinsmen and ancestors. An essential element seems to have been that the entire community eat and drink together, although other community activities, such as games and contests, were likely to have been a part of the festivities.
