I am with the black pieces in this game and please don't take my rating seriously I am actually just 1500, this rating is on lichess. So players rated above 1600 on this site please see this game and please tell me where do I need to improve

Don't Exchange your good Knight. On move 16 you exchanged but there is no need in such situation and its controlling more squares in center.

but he opened the file and got a pawn after that so is it not good to exchange a center piece for a pawn advantage??

In this case he might win on one pawn advantage but if he really want to improve then find what's good pieces and what's bad pieces and exchange your bad pieces with the opponents good pieces.

1. Should have made the knight a little more active.

2. You had a chance to bring the rook to the opposite side, doing that would slim the chance of the king's escape.

3. Should have pushed the h and g rook side pawns and not exchanging them.

 

(PS: This is all I found and I am not 1600 Im just 1500+)
