Sneaky Algebra Proof that 2 + 2 = 5

Start: x = y

Multiply both sides by x: x² = xy

Subtract y²: x² - y² = xy - y²

Factor both sides: (x - y)(x + y) = y(x - y)

Cancel (x - y): x + y = y

Substitute x = y: y + y = y → 2y = y

Divide by y: 2 = 1

Add 2: 4 = 3

Add 1: 5 = 4

Therefore: 2 + 2 = 5

Find the mistake first (no searching it up) and you get 5 cheers! You only have 3 lives!

Well then u have a good fresh start 😈.

Factor both sides: (x - y)(x + y) = y(x - y) is wrong i think

Wrong. 2/3 lives. Since (x-y)(x+y) = y(x-y) simplifies to 0=0, this is legit.

Substitute x = y: y + y = y → 2y = y

Avatar of Perfectly_1mperfect

it was wrong before the cancel stage thats for sure

Welllllll…… the trap made that happen but y+y IS 2y, soooooooo…. sorry 1/3 lives remaining.

Not going to say anything but that :)

Avatar of Perfectly_1mperfect

Its not in the other ones so there must be a mistake in cancelation

My dad's a math teacher wait

Avatar of Perfectly_1mperfect

Cancelation is incorrect because it doesn't work if x=y

i dont wanna solve this i am cooked in maths 💀

Cancel (x - y): x + y = y //

You can't do that as it's not given that (x-y) does not equal to 0 . 🙂

huh

Avatar of Perfectly_1mperfect

yeah cancellation is wrong
