Most of you know full well that I always prefer the fair and democratic way of selecting the team members of our Team Philippines, and that is a true National Open tournament. But, if I were given the power to hand-pick the players, here are my pick.
Board 1 - Wesley So:
He is our best player right now and I like a lot of things about him. The way he carries himself... the way he plays the game... and that great potential that I hope will be realized soon!
Board 2 - Eugene Torre:
First and foremost, he is a good friend. I've met a lot of people through the years, the majority of them were just tremendously good people, but I can tell you that overall, Euge is at the top of my list. Plus, he can still play and especially, the Olympiad brings out the best in him. I put him in board 2 because he's the second best player in my list. Oh, I also want him to establish an Olympiad record of most participation by a player!
Board 3 - Iskuba Dayb:
Honestly, my first thought was Glenn Bordonada but I just remembered that he mentioned a while back that he wasn't feeling that well and that he prefers to stay home to play and watch games in the net. So, why not me? I'm enjoying the game again unlike my last few years before my sudden retirement from the game. I'd like to experience the Olympiad again and enjoy it this time. I want to meet Wesley and Magnus! I especially want to hook up with Eugene again.
Board 4 - Alex Milagrosa:
Some of you probably don't know him. He is one tough and tenacious veteran who, I was surprised to learn, not only does he still play the game, he is still racking up successes even more so now than when he was at his younger days. He's about mid-fifties now, maybe close to 60. He was already a Mamaw when I started as a junior. He will represent hope and joy for all the professional players who never made it to the Phil team. And the way we select team members now, they will never have another chance.
Board 5 - Paul Bersamina:
He is the new hope. He is 13 years old, I think... maybe still 12... I don't know his birthday. I like the way he plays. He is very good in the endgame for a very young player. I also like the way he handles himself... very humble and such a nice young man. Like a young Torre and his Kuya Wesley.
Why did I pick this team? Well, the NFCP picks the members all the time and we always end up in the gutter! So, I'd rather chose players that I like and that I know so that even if we lose, at least, I'm happy with it. Plus, I think this team will kick some butt!!!

::: ::: :::
based on the above Nov 2011 FIDE computations my choice will be:
1. So, Wesley
2. Barbosa, Oliver (He has proven in the last 2011 Indonesian tournament that he could play Vs hyper/hydra & Super GMs with good results)
3. Antonio, Rogelio Jr
4. Paragua, Mark
5. Torre, Eugene (to establish and break the Chess Olympiad record ... his 21st participation in the 2012 Olympiad could be it ... a very rare opportunity for him and for the country !!!)
Dear Kabarangays please post here your nomination for the 2012 Olympiad Selection. 2 things, the method of choosing the players or your choice of players.
Mine for example is:
To select the 5 members, the 4 shall be selected by Elo ranking and 1 player (must be a GM) to be selected/seeded by NCFP.
My line-up:
1. So
2. Barbosa
3. Antonio
4. Sanchez
Depending on their FIDE Elo rating before the Olympiad, Paragua, Laylo, Gomez and the others have still a chance to catch up.
I suggest Eugenio Torre to be the nominee for 4th/5th board and playing team-captain.
What's your take?
