We always played that you're not eliminated until your king it taken, and you can leave yourself in check or move into check.  Additionally, when your king is captured, the person who took it takes over your surviving pieces.

This can result in some weird strategies where Player 1 leaves himself in check from Player 3, forcing Player 2 to intervene or face a Player 3 with a much-strengthened army.  And for Player 2 to intervene might cost him his queen...
