In 1973 Chase and Simon published the paper "Perception in Chess" which recruited three chess players; a master, a class A player and a beginner.
They had 5 second peaks at a chess position.
The master could recall 16 pieces
The class A player could recall 8 pieces
The beginner could only recall 4 pieces.
Masters specifically have better memory for positions that occur in real games.
In addition to about 10,000 hours you need
1. repeated attempts with feedback (analyze your games!)
2. valid environment (e.g. chess club)
3. timely feedback
4. don't stay in your comfort zone
"The best predictor of skill level, is not the number of games or tournaments played, but the number of hours dedicated to serious solitary study. Players spend thousands of hours alone studying chess theory, studying their own games and those of others. And they play through compositions which are puzzles designed to help you recognise tactical patterns. It can be challenging to force yourself to practice deliberately. And this is why coaches and teaches are so valuable."
