maybe adjust by opening 4 sq in middle, and changing promotion to camels, knight riders and camel knights?...

It does not seem OK: the short middle pass if for balancing the players who have checkmated someone ( takeover ), and have weak kingside, like here: https://www.chess.com/4-player-chess?g=3188246.

Promotion to Nightrider - I like it!
Promotion to Camel: Yes!
Promotion to Wildebeest: Clearly no. Fast cooperated checkmates are possible.

rules: both green and blue are random immune zombies, play-for-mate is enabled, and pawns promote on the 6th rank promoting to any peice.

Now we need test it, but I think it is balanced for ffa now. For ffa and solo (not teams).
