A "System"-like approach to the English

I played 1.c4 2.g3 3. Bg2 4.Nc3 5.e3 6.Nge2 for like 4 games in a row. I dont know, but is this line playable against any defence? It seems like it is. I'm feeling guilty of falling into "blitzing" the opening, but it really looks promising all the time. Am I doing it right?

AlcherTheMovie

I have seen may posts that say that Nge2 is played to go for Nf4?? and that is to control d5?? Isnt that overkill for a single square? The reason I play Nge2 is to gradually shift it to the Qside after I castled Kside. That's interesting, I'll look for games that Nf4 is played and see what this line feels like.

Please , if you can, give me your points and ideas about the game that I posted. I'd be happy for your thoughts. Thanks :)

AlcherTheMovie

Thanks for your ideas, I learned alot from them.

Few things I'd like to add:

1.) Yes, I think that my opponent is a bit lazy on his side, maybe when he saw that his pieces (Q and N) were able to "penetrate" (or at least they look like) he was certain that mate will ensue. Another thing I noticed is that Black was probably waiting for me to transpose into a KID (or some sort of it) with d4. That maybe is the reason he played 8...Ne5? anticipating that I will defend with 9.d3

2.)I am really certain that if I continue to play the English, I'll face someone who will wait for me to castle then start a pawn-storm. That's the worst thing I can think of. I'm very poor at defending with a fianchetto position - an irony since theory says that it is the most solid castled position for the king.

3.)Lastly, I'm curious about the "eternal knight" on d5. Would you please show me a game, or even just a diagram showing what it is ?

@ccssii - Hi, I think you misunderstood my post. What I meant is that I'm blitzing my opening(playing too fast) - not playing blitz chess. I play G/30 btw.

AlcherTheMovie

@ccssii - Ahh, ok. Thanks for clarifying that up.

Well, I have another thing in my mind that I'd like to post in a different thread, but I guess that will only create clutter and it still seems fitting into this thread.

The idea is : Sewing the English into my current repertoire.

Basically, my rep looks like this:

1.d4 for white (with 2.c4 against 6th rank pawn moves and 1..d5)

1...c6 against 1.e4 and 1...d5 (QGD setup to follow) against 1.d4

Should I make a rep change if I decide to exclusively play 1.c4?

AlcherTheMovie

Okay, what I mean is that changing my Black defenses so that my switch to 1.c4 will be double-sided .Is there a defense for black that "compliments" 1.c4? I mean, in my case, playing both sides of the QGD really helps my study time, since I don't have to learn that much theory since most of the threats I play with White is the threats I defend with black.

To cut it short, I just thought, would switching to, lets say, the Sicilian, will be good since I'm playing its White counterpart, the English Opening?

I want to make my repertoire as "clean" as possible, and 1.c4 looks like the best option since there are very few variations that I need to memorize, and I'm getting the piece placement that I want unlike when I play 1.d4

Don't worry Alcher. I do the same thing. I play nc3 before g3 and bg2 though.

I play the stauton when i get bored of the bottinivik. However what about e4?

LightningBoltOfZeus

I just played a game with the e3 english but i forgot that he had d5!I don't know really if if i should play e3  in the english but stick with the bottinivik.

Narahari28

Unless you decide to play ultra-cautious and play d3 followed by e4 later. But that seems like a wasted tempo.
