Whenever we need a plan, looking at where our pawn structure is pointing is always helpful. With that in mind, how would you play with white?

Strategic_Brilliance

I would play f5

Strategic_Brilliance

breaking open the centre, as the black king is in the middle, if black castles kingside, then queen takes h5, threatening mate after the white pawn on f5 moves out of the way.

So these puzzles will improve people's both tactical and positional skills. I can eventually understand the type of position quite instantly.

I have actually written a lesson in a different club on this! This rule generally applies more in closed positions as piece movement is normally severely restricted. This position is at least much better for white because black does not have any pawn breaks, and f5 is a really powerful pawn break we can play. f5 appears to be the best move. doubling on the f file can be done, but you do not really want your f pawn break to be stopped with g6 for example, so f5 immediately is best
