After V2 goes

We are working to add it back. It was not intentional. Should be fixed later today. That said, it certainly WILL be going away soon. I would recommend you start to spend some time on V3 to get to know it better. Everything takes a little time, and then you get used to it. I've been through 4-5 major changes on my iphone. And with Windows. And with my favorite running shoes. And learning to drive on the left hand side of the road (you guys are nuts!). After a while, you just get used to it and cannot imagine how it used to be. That said, I know the process isn't easy or fun for everyone. But this is how software works. The YouTube, Facebook, Google and every major site of today is not the same as it once was. And when they change, everyone is mad and says it is a step backwards. And then in a few days they are used to it. I'm not trying to sound uncaring - I care a lot! I'm just being realistic. We've kept V2 around for a VERY long time to try to make every last person possible happy, and have made a lot of changes to make V3 more like V2 in many ways. The last hurdle is that V3 does not perform as well on older computers (especially the people still using Windows XP!). We are working on speeding it up for older CPUs. Once that happens, we will finally retire V2. Just like we did with V1 long ago. I'm sorry for those who are frustrated by this. I truly am.

The Above is apparently a fair copy of what Erik said probably less than 48 hours ago.

I will take it as such and comment,

This has been coming for a while. My attitude is quite straightforward. The way all this has happened has been pretty disgraceful. Anyone who has followed the whole thing has seen all sorts of things like the killing of threads, abuse for dissenters as old, as stupid, as resisting progress ETC ETC

OK. having said that, it is the way that most change happens in this old world today.

Faced with this reality, There is a choice. Walk away or stay.

If you say walk away, I understand, and it has been really great to know you.

Stay has two sub-choices, wait and see, or accept and try to do, and even cope with V3.

For anyone who wants to learn this V3 thing, how do we do it?

That is  the point of my thread.

Let the discussion begin.

I may from time to time come up with my own suggestions.

Suggestion #1.

Make an inventory of existing material on How V3 works.

Then evaluate it, and if necessary revise it to be better

Avatar of camter

Please, this is not to be for debating the relative merits of V2, or V3. There are already places to do that.

I do wonder how many actually know how prolific Windows XP still is in the world.  Everytime you drive/walk by an ATM.. you are passing a system running Windows XP.  Feel free to verify that with anyone working at NCR if you do not believe me.

As far as functionality goes, Windows 7, 8, 10 .. offered no improvements to what is already a well-defined, functioning system. NCR engineers know how Windows XP works, know how to support it, and so on. The programs do what they need to do to offer the service needed and expected of ATMs.

The very same can be said of v2 in chess.com. It was working very well as it was. I certainly hope Erik still maintains a copy of the code. He'd probably make a good amount of $$ selling the source code to a 3rd party. So much in v3 is still sub-par to what was offered in v2:

  • the Game Explorer – succinct, easy to navigate.

  • Game Analysis and the compiled report that went with it. Easy to see one's blunders, mistakes, and other minor errors .. and the lines of continuation for those tangents.

  • The User Interface – simple as heck. Cripes, even Camter could navigate it.

  • The Tactics interface was also better. Simpler and more functional on a single-page. In v3, the user must weave her/his way around a plethora of non-descript icons and tabs… and pray like tacos that the 'back' button works.

  • Icons? In v2, icons and buttons were always clearly labeled and sometimes doubly so. V3 is such a hodge-podge of icons. Good luck to the novice user in navigating the Cape Horn of interfaces in his/her dingy. Just look at how participation in groups / clubs has waned over the years!

  • v2's Activity Alert / Yellow box was a life-saver of time for the group admin. Now alerts in v3 are all jammed together in to one bell of an icon.

  • Performance. Last I checked, v2 was still vastly faster to v3. And don't tell me it's my laptop or my O.S. One of chess.com's own staff came and saw my issues first-hand and confirmed my situation. … but, I'm in the 2% of malcontents, so… sucks to be me.

  • Pagination.  v2 >> v3... adding to the load time woes for pages in v3.  The cumbersome design of v3 necessitates that it will never be as fast as v2.

I could go on.

I have internet at home, mostly on tablets that aren't easy to type with.  So I use library computers for easy typing and a convenient mouse for navigation.  I am pretty sure all the library computers are using Windows 7.

Doesn't that suggest something when chess.com is trying to make V3 more like V2

Avatar of camter

I agree, Needs to be simple enough for even me to navigate. A user manual for me would only confuse the issue.

One of the biggest problems on v3 is it's lack of tolerance towards bad weaker internet connections. When I changed from v2 to v3 my disconnection rate at least quadrupled.

Well, when V2 is finally gone I'll go through the pain of really learning how to use V3. After a few weeks I'll either settle into using it, or just use chess dot com a lot less than I used to.

Lawdog, we are victims of our love for Chess, even to the extent of coming to terms with the thing which has so diminished the worth of the site which left all others for dead..

A bit like having a wife, who was a superb cook, and who in a mad moment decides to throw out all her recipes, and melt down all the cooking apparatus. Does not completely ruin the marriage, but sure means you do not hang around as much.

V2 diehards.  The few.  The forgotten.  The discarded.

Not forgotten. I just don't know how else to help you at this point. There is no going back, and while I understand that is what some of you would prefer, all of our other numbers point the other direction. So I am sympathetic and feel like I have tried every possible way to help people move forward. But at the end of the day, I can't make everyone happy, and that is hugely disappointing to me and to you. I'm sorry.

Oh well we will just have to suck it up then, although there will be some people who will leave the sight on account that they can't accept change, my main gripe is that V3 doesn't transfer to android very well ie tablet smartphone etc, to get the full benefit those who only play on those devices will have to go and buy laptops and computers which is not really very fair if money tight, now I won't leave because I love playing on chess.com, but I'm not getting the full benefit because I am playing on an android tablet, now my question is Erik, when is chess, com going to address the issues with android devices so we can all enjoy playing on this great site, thank you

Avatar of flabbi

Erik, answer me this please.  How do I "chat" during a daily game in V3 while using a tablet with a virtual keyboard?  I can easily type a note, but there is no "enter" button anywhere, as there is in v2, or if using a laptop or library computer, which has a manual keyboard, I can tap the "enter" key.  Very frustrating.

Avatar of camter

If missing friends still have a look now and then, Erik is ready to run V3 without being held back by V2, and so please wish him luck with that.

Thanks for the comments @superdrewe53

We are working on fixing the Android menu for mobile web. Also, have you used our native App - it's made for Android! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.chess

@flabbi - I believe every keyboard has SOME kind of Enter/Submit button. If not, can you please describe yours more?

Avatar of flabbi

Using an Amazon Fire tablet right now, I see no "enter" on the virtual keyboard anywhere.  But, of course, that is no problem for chatting during daily games in V2 because "enter" or "post" are simply incorporated in the chess.com screen.
