Yeah.
Here is the game for everyone: https://www.chess.com/game/live/77921467533 My king was the dark squared bishop and his was the rook that got captured at the end.

Nice, that's pretty cool.

Having to move the decoy king out of check definitely changes the gameplay, but that's still a cool proof-of-concept game.

PeetTheSockMan

awesome

Yeah, I really like this! Honestly, its probably about as good as 3-Check or KOTH! I think it will be very popular if it is made!

PeetTheSockMan

i want to play a game (or three) of this with someone. can you make it a daily game?

phillip100

I would, but I have almost 40 daily games going when my most is usually 20... maybe once it goes down to at least 25.

I really like this too! I'm not custom variants expert but it wouldn't seem all that hard to implement either (?)

Definitely worth asking about in custom variants club 8)

Green_Sleeves

I really don’t know how hard it would be to implement. I posted this here (instead of the Custom Variants group) because it would involve at least some new coding to be implemented by the Variants admins. I can copy this over to the Custom Variants group, too, if that’s the right place to put this.

I'll see what I can do! I asked some devs and CGA's so hopefully I'll get a response happy.png

In the Bible story, the soldiers did find out that the king wasn’t royal.

1 Kings 22:32-33 (ESV)
And when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat [the fake king], they said, “It is surely the king of Israel.” So they turned to fight against him. And Jehoshaphat cried out. And when the captains of the chariots saw that it was not the king of Israel, they turned back from pursuing him.

It’s after this point in the story that the game would be taking place.

phillip100

That doesn't really matter, but I think its really cool that it is based off a Bible story!

oh i see. hmm, i think this variant actually exists only it lets you make one of your pawns royal instead

Wouldn’t it be extremely easy to capture every pawn, in that case?

phillip100

It should be any piece other than the queen, and possibly the king.

By the way, I just whipped this up really quick in the Variants server, as another way to test out the game.

This will allow you to play without having to move the decoy king out of check. Unfortunately, there's no castling in this version, and (again) it would be on the honor system for you to manually resign when "Ahab" gets captured.

BlackmoonTheDragon

One question, is there checks/checkmates, or is it just a capturing game?

Well players don't know what their opponent's royal is, and you can put your royal in check too; So I guess it's just about capturing.

Green_Sleeves

Yes, this is a capture-the-royal variant.
