Cool
Almost blind chess theme with checkers pieces

On a related note, I have played blindfold chess before (no pieces), but I kept looking at the move list. Does that count?

Although I think playing blindfold with the sheet is a wonderful ability, which I'd someday like to have, I don't believe it's generally considered strictly blindfold.
There was one blindfold player (Najdorf, maybe??) whose record was discounted in his time, because when asked if he had the scoresheets, he said he did. But this was a mistranslation or misinterpretation, because he meant that he had the sheets *at home*, not that he had access to them during the games!

Nice! Yeah the variant chess with checkers definitely helps as well as the aforementioned vision & solo chess

I wish I knew they already had this variant! There doesn't seem to be a way to play it against bots though, as I'd have liked to for self-training. I wish they'd just make it into a skin instead of, or in addition to, it being a variant, since unlike other variants, the difference is not in the rules, but in visual presentation.
I'm not yet able to play a complete game with the full Blindfold theme. And maybe there are some others here as well for whom that's the case.
So this is an intermediate step towards the blindfold theme that I've been trying today, using faint checkers-like pieces in my theme. My idea is that I'll make the pieces fainter and fainter over time, until they become completely invisible, and that'll give me a more gradual transition to the Blindfold theme.
Note that all the pieces are circles, so I still need to remember which piece is which, although for now, I've differentiated the two sides' colors, with white being red, and black being blue.
