I would say its generally easier to improve if you are younger. That is why you find many players achieving master status by the time they are in their late teens or early 20's. It all depends.

If he wants to become a master he should not stick to one opening. This strategy will get you quickly into 1600s (like i have achieved) but it will be extremely difficult to progress beyond that (like i have recognized).

I guess it also depends on your playing style. What I mean by that is what do you feel comfortable with. Do you prefer Queen pawn or King Pawn? Are you more positional or are you more aggressive and tactical?
Those questions come in to play later on.

Thanks for your feedback, I'll start doing some more puzzle rush, and you are spot on. I barely do puzzle rush lol. Also, I have been sticking with one opening with white, I've been playing the Vienna. Just with all the Caro-Kann players at my skill level it makes it difficult to keep playing the Vienna.

@AstroDogePlaysChess The honest truth is that the journey from 1100 to 2000 on chess.com is SO MUCH HARDER then that from 200-1100. Openings, puzzles, they all matter. But to get to Rapid 2000, you literally have to be knocking on the door to NM status (it equates to about 1800 USCF). Chess has to be your passion, and you have to be willing to spend a couple hours a day for the next couple years studying the game! But yes, if you do that, then you can EASILY be a 2000+ player by 20. Maybe even a NM.
I've known how to play since I was 7 years old, but I only started playing when I was 13, in September. I was around 300-400 back then, now since September 2023, I am 14 with a rapid rating of 1100 (Chess.com) and a rapid of 1500 in Lichess with a tournament at my local school under my belt. I score an average of 80-85% accuracy on good days, and around 70-75% on bad days, and on extra good days when I'm playing well, I get around 90-95% accuracy, I'm not wondering if I'm going to be a master or anything, just wondering that if I stick with chess, I'll get to 2000+ by the time I'm twenty. Feel free to review my games and give me some things to improve on. I'm open to criticism, thank you in advance. (:
