the thing is is that hardly any variants have a big community here. i play antichess and it is the same way. i would much rather go to lichess and get good competition over there.

I think it's because we have so many people who play only one or two games, the average player is really bad at variants. And you don't actually have to be good to get a high elo if everyone else is bad
There is not as many people, In lichess, in 2015, 1800's were 2200 because there wasnt as much as players, here im 2400 on lichess im 2000-2100 https://lichess.org/@/SharkBaitHooHaHah
so I know the variants system is in a much better place than it was around this same time last year, but the ratings for variants especially atomic seem very inflated people that are rated 1900 dont play like 1900 and even I a 2200 am only a mere 1800 on other sites. I think the amount of rating you get needs to be scaled down as well as matchmaking, I feel as if most of the time im being matched up against people who have just started the game . its not a big problem as I know its just a variant in a small community but it would be nice to have a rating that means something as well as good opponents now and then
