Thank you for sharing, Steven!
Avie's training journal
Pretty frustrated at the moment. I've lost several games where I've played well, and been in strong positions. However, let it slip in the endgame, and ended up losing. Too much carelessness! Still I shall persevere. Maybe I'm being too rash. My opponent's avg. rating is not that much under 1500. I should realize that its not going to come back 'just like that'.
I've set a target of stabilising my score at >1400 by the end of Jan.
I've also completed an application form for a chess congress in Perth at the end of Jan. That's something I am looking forward too!
Hi folks
A wee update folks. My rating is hovering around the 1400 mark. I've had a good win against a ~1650 player. However I keep capitulating against lower rated players.
I used up all my time in the computer workout/tactics trainer and reached 1700+. Needless to say a silly error took me right down again.
I've been playing QG every chance I get, and I think I'm beginning to develop a better understanding of it.
The QG is so sexy, the KG is not so much. Uncle gave me a severe lesson when I played the KG against him!
Perth chess congress begins next Friday night, and I'm really looking forward to some "real" action!

I hope you will share some of your games from the congress.
KG is brutal! A wee bit like Fight Club for mental warriors
Hi folks
Perth C.C. was a disaster! I lost all my matches. Thats life I guess.
I really need to start being less impetuous. Have I said that here before? Even a guy that I played in Perth said I was playing too quick - referring to a move I played as he forked my knight & bishop!
So, I've made a promise to myself that I'm going to make more use of the analysis board during games - at least 5 mins/move. I'm aiming to increase my average time per move from 50 mins to somewhere in the region of 70 mins
Furthermore, I'm using the computer workout to play random positions for at least one hour per day.
Some silly defeats has taken my rating down to 1350ish. I'm hoping that this eatra practice, and care will take me back up again.

Care to post some game from the Perth C.C.?
"cleaned" them away....;)
In one game I got beat from a 13 y-o boy. Quite a strong player. However, I lost it when he skewered my queen and rook.

I've managed to get my rating up to +1500. That's higher than what I was at this stage. I hope that I won't drop as much as the 100pts like I did when I reached 1450. Therefore, in the meantime I'll try and stay at 1450+, and slowly build from there.
I'm currently playing a guy rated around 1700. Both games are going fairly well. Favourable results in those would take my best victory up a notch.
I haven't had a look at the server Eric suggested as of yet. However, I will soon hopefully.
Avie.
Caio folks
A wee update: I've qualified for my first final! I'm so chuffed. I've also managed to stay above 1500 for a wee while. Good stuff. I did beat the guy rated ~1700. However, after the rating adjustment, it was only 1684. My best win so far though.
I'd love to say that everything was fabulous, but I'm completely choked with the flu just now!

I'm not so sure if the guts position was that hopeless here. I felt like I was running out of ideas to kill him off. Thoughts anyone?
Aniway. I was really happy with the way I played - very aggressive. It reminded me of how I played when I was younger.
I'm playing in the Europe Open Championship -novice category. Its a tournament that I really want to do well in. 5/5 in round 1 so far. I'm a happy camper!
Hi all,
I'm Steven, I'm thirty-five years old and live in Scotland.I started playing chess when I was eight, or nine. Up till the age of twelve I was fanatical, representing Scotland and playing chess all over the country.
It was put to the side when I became a teenager, and I've barely played since.
I had a brain haemorrhage at twenty-one. When I have played since I've noticed that I don't have the "capacity" to be complete in my thoughts when analysing a situation. I've completed a mathematics degree since, so I still have something to work with!
To improve my game, I'd like to do two things:
1. Hopefully get back to something near the standard I once played as a child.
2. I'm a big fan of the Queen's Gambit, but I've never given it a thorough study.
Hopefully on here, I can do both.
Cheers
Steven
