avysk's Yusupov intermediate study plan

It's Tuesday, and Tuesday will be day 1.

To remember: before starting the plan my Blitz rating was 1457 (highest 1516), rapid 1530 (highest 1530).

Day 1 results:

1. I had some daily games running, so I have made moves in those. The advice to spend approximately 5 minutes per move really helped: I have tried to force myself to think for this time and suddenly found a winning tactic in one of the games which I would miss otherwise. It would be a pity to miss it, I think that in a problem I would see it immediately. My opponent has resigned.

Point to remember: in daily games, there is enough time to consider every position as a problem to solve.

2. I did some puzzles at chess.com, as much as free access allows me, but it's not my main source of puzzles. I did solve about 50 (relatively easy) tactical problems elsewhere.

3. I did play 3 rapid games (15+10) with +2-1=0 result => rating +50 to 1580.

My opponent let this game timeout in a lost position.

I've lost my internet connection during the game and, as a consequence, the game itself. It's a pity.

4. I just finished the games and this post, and it is 23:58 here, so I have no time to analyze these games. I'll do it tomorrow.

Analysis of rapid game 1 from day 1. Done manually on the board, adding notes; then checked with engine and added notes (marked with "**engine**"). Humiliating results.

Analysis of rapid game 2 from day 1. Done manually on the board, adding notes; then checked with engine and added notes (marked with "**engine**").  Not very meaningful, I've lost my connection (and game) in a winning position; not much happened before that.

Analysis of rapid game 3 from day 1.  Done manually on the board, adding notes; then checked with engine and added notes (marked with "**engine**"). If in the first game I thought most of the time I'm losing while I was winning, in this game I was worse but felt I'm better almost all the time...

Week 1, day 2 report.

0. (finished) reviewing of the games from day 1

1. Made moves in daily games

2. Did about 20 tactical puzzles

3. Played 4 blitz games, 3+2 (+1-2=1) => blitz rating -11 (1446)

avysk

Week 1, day 3 report.

1. Made moves in 5 daily games.

2. Solved 20 puzzles from ChessKing's "Chess tactics for beginners" course.

3. Played 3 rapid games (15+10), +2-1=0 => rapid rating +30 to 1610.

4. Analyzed the 1st rapid game; two will do tomorrow (they are not that interesting, though; in the one I've lost I blundered a queen, in the one I've won my opponent was blitzing).

Analyzed game is below; I did manual analysis on the chessboard adding notes, then fired up an engine and verified my analysis (adding comments marked **engine**).

Week 1, day 4 report.

0. Finished analysing rapid games from yesterday. Bad blunder in this one:

Quick win in this one, with nice checkmate in the middle of the board. However, I've completely missed Bxf7 tactics two (!) times at the beginning of the game, even though I know it is typical in Scotch Gambit, and I was looking for it. I have no idea how I've missed it.

1. Made moves in 5 daily games (won one).

2. Solved 20 puzzles from ChessKing's "Chess tactics for beginners" course.

3. Played 4 blitz games (3+2) with sad +1-2=1 result => blitz rating -10 to 1436.

avysk

Week 1, day 5 report (yesterday):

1. Made moves in 5 daily games (started one new).

2. Solved 20 puzzles from ChessKing's "Chess tactics for beginners" course.

3. Played 2 rapid games (15+10) though the 2nd was very quick win; +2-0=0 => rapid rating  +45 => 1655.

Week 1, day 6 report:

0. Analyzed rapid games from tomorrow:

The second one is a fast win, not meaningful:

1. Made moves in daily games, won 1, started one new game.

2. Solved 20 puzzles from ChessKing's "Chess tactics for beginners" course.

3. Got a trial chess.com membership and solved over 100 puzzles, getting the puzzles rating of 1804.

4. Worked with a chessboard on the examples in Yusupov's chapter 1, mating motifs.

5. Listened to chess.com "intermediate" lectures for probably 1 hour. Very disappointed by the level of those (is rook pawn + king vs. king really "intermediate"?), but will work on them in order anyway, hoping that the level becomes right for me.

avysk

Week 1, day 7 report.

1. Solved over 20 puzzles from ChessKing "Chess tactics for beginners" course.

2. Got chess.com membership yesterday, and got carried away with puzzles a bit: solved yesterday and today over 200 puzzles, bringing puzzle rating to 2234.

3. Made moves in daily games. Won one; started a couple more. The daily rating is now 1501.

4. Did exercises in chapter 1 of Yusupov's book, with 14/16 score ("excellent").

5. Extra: finished "Winning with tactics" chess.com lessons.

avysk

1. Did daily moves.

2. Solved over 20 puzzles from ChessKing "Chess tactics for beginners" course.

4. Played 5 rapid games, +3-2=0 => rapid rating +15 to 1670. Two were not interesting quick wins, 3 others will analyze tomorrow. **Edit** got a message that my last opponent who found extremely good moves very fast was blocked for cheating => rapid rating 1681.

5. Extra: practiced with some success mate with bishop and knight, but not feeling sure yet.

avysk

Game 1:

avysk

Week 2, day 4 report.

I have not enough time, unfortunately.

0. Did *not* analyze the rapid games from day 3.

1. Played my moves in daily games.

2. Solved about 30 puzzles from ChessKing's "Tactics for beginners" course.

3. Played 6 blitz (3+2) games: +3-3=0 => blitz rating +1 to 1429. The first time since the beginning of the training I did not lose blitz rating happy.png

Week 2, day 5 report.

The life prevented me from doing anything, except that I managed to solve about 150 puzzles from ChessKing's "Tactics for beginners" course in the pauses between different emergencies...

Regarding the last two days, Week 2 day 4 / day 5: I'm going to proceed with the plan on day 6, and will try to compensate later for what I've missed, but I'm not going to fret over it even if I don't. Knowing myself, having "I have to finish this before I proceed further" backlog will stop me from progressing.

avysk

Week 2, day 6 report.

1. Played moves in daily games.

2. Solved maybe 20 chess.com puzzles, got puzzle rating to 2400+, yay!

3. Worked through the second chapter of Yusupov's book; took maybe a couple of hours.

4. Spent about 40 minutes working through Lawrence Trent's ChessBase 60 minutes course on Scotch gambit (which I play regularly as White). Went through maybe 1/3 of the course. I'll need to work through these parts again for sure.

avysk

Week 2, day 7 report.

1. Played moves in daily games.

2. Solved over 20 puzzles from ChessKing's "Tactics for beginners" course.

3. Worked through exercises in the second chapter of Yusupov's book, getting "excellent" result.
