Assuming they're the same as the ones I saw in Belgium (and occasionally in the liquor stores here), they are.
So are they just a gimick, or is there a practical reason for their shape?

Haha, I've not seen the double stand before -- looks slightly challenging.
I've had a Kwak out of the single stand though (both in Belgium and here). It seems a little unnerving at first, but the glass is actually locked in there fairly securely unless you lift it up (the glass, that is) until it's narrow enough to pass through the channel in the stand.
I never took it out -- I assumed it was to be drunk by picking up the stand (as in your picture. The dowel in the stand is a nice diameter for gripping, and my beer stays cold and my hand warm. No need to even touch the glass.
Bonus: No beer glass droppage due to condensation (and it is humid in Belgium).
I enjoyed Kwak too.
I believe this is an often overlooked element of enjoying good beer, especially at home, but also often at pubs that serve good beer and should know enough to serve it in the right glassware but do not.
I found a handy guide that I've linked to (via the image) below:
Again, www.craftbeer.com proves to be a fantastic resource.
