What is a chess ladder?

It’s simply a never ending competition between “Bob Dylan” group members. Players can join at any time. All players have a ranking. Players can challenge other players up to three positions higher than their current ranking. If the lower player wins, then the two players swap ladder positions.

The purpose of this ladder is for group members to get to know other members and to have some fun playing chess. This system of competition is designed to cater for players of all ability.

How do I join?

Simply post your interest on this topic and you will be notified when you have been added to the table. New players are placed on the existing ladder based on chess.com rating. To play a challenge game just follow the procedure outlined in the rules posted below. 

1. Bob Dylan group members only can participate.

2. To enter players must post a message on this forum.

3. Your initial ladder placing will be based on your rating at time of joining the ladder. As an incentive to challenge and be challenged, you will be given just a small boost to your ladder position upon first joining the group, +2 ladder rungs up from the bottom per the rating-group you fall into. Ratings are grouped as follows: under 1000, 1001-1200, 1201-1400, 1401-1600, 1601-1800, 1801-2000, over 2000 
(ex: If your online chess rating is 800 and you are the 25th person to sign up, you will be placed at rank #23, if your rating is 1100, and you are the 25th person to sign up, you will be placed at rank #21, and so on - The highest you can start at is 14 spots up from the bottom, if you are rated over 2000 online chess rating.)

4. Challenges can only be made to players ranked a maximum of three (3) places above your current ladder position. For example the highest a person ranked 10th can challenge is 7th.To make a challenge a player must:

·         Post the challenge on this forum

·         Send a message to your opponent.

·         Send challenge game.

4(b). If the three players higher than you in ladder are all currently playing a game, you can move up to the next highest player that is available. (Example: If you're ranked 10th, and rank 9 through 7 are all currently player ladder games, check with 6th rank first - if available, you must challenge them - if not, you can check with 5th rank.) This is the only occasion when you can challenge more than 3 spaces higher than you.

5. When sending the challenge game, play as a random colour, and have a time control of three days. Player should decide if game is rated or not rated. If an agreement cannot be made, the game is unrated.

6. The normal chess.com game rules apply. Vacation time is allowed.

7. All correctly made challenges must be accepted.

8. A player can only participate in one challenge game at a time.

9. If the lower ranked player wins then the players exchange places. If the higher placed player wins or the game is drawn, then players remain in the same position on the ladder.

10. Winning players must inform KnightBurgler of the result.
