This has happened to me also, but I forgot about it until now. It happened in this game after my opponent played 9. Bb5 (though I cannot reproduce it now when I look at the archived) game).
Edit: I can reproduce it after I toggle the fog on my opponent's pieces (like it would be during the game) and go back and forth several times. I tested this for a while, seeing the number of times it takes to go back and forth to get the piece to appear, and it appears to happen (very roughly) once every 20-40 back and forths

I could do it almost consistently, during a game.
If you go back and forward a move quickly, you can see what piece just occupied the square your piece can go, for exmaple:
In this position, you would be able to see the black king in front of your pawn.
You can also use this method to see what piece just too your piece, for example:
You would be able to see the black king.
