I have a bug in Fog of War: when I promote to a rook (when playing on my phone) the next move of mine is automatically that promored rook one square back (where the pawn just stood)

Can this be reliably replicated? It might be an unintentional premove

There is a spell bug in Enchanted Woodland. While playing the spell lasts 2 turns and refills after 5 turns.

There is a known premove bug when analyzing the game on the touch screen. The rook in the promotion option is always one square down so by clicking there you would set a premove for the new rook. Swap the rook and the knight and the problem is solved. BTW, that black promotion window is hardly readable.

That is intentional, per the creator's original submission

It should be written in the rules anyway.

Hello Wolyn, I don't understand you. 'so by clicking there you would set a premove'? 'Swap the rook and the knight'? I want to promote to a rook not a knight.

Look at this game: Fog of War Chess - Zelfmat76 vs prodeegee - Play Chess Variants Online - Chess.com

Offcourse at the moment my opponent plays Kf2 I unintentionally premoved Ra8-a7. This always happens when I promote to a rook. If I play e7-e8R then the next move will be Re8-e7 etc.

You chose to promote the rook by tapping the a7 square because the rook was covering it. By doing so, you also unintentionally premoved Ra8-a7. It was a legal move, so it was played. If the rook and knight (R<->N) had been swapped, tapping the b7 square (R) wouldn't have created any premove (Ra8-b7 is not a legal move).

If it helps, I added a game description (that shows in chat) to the variant that is basically a copy of Spell Chess' but with some edits to match the variant, but it'll take a developer to implement something to explicitly say it in the rules (if they decide to do so).

Hey everyone, there's a bug in Fog of War chess where if the opponent takes your piece and you lose vision of it, there's a small chance the enemy piece will flash on screen before the square goes dark. This gives you extra information if you are able to catch what the enemy piece is when it flashes. For example I was playing black in this game: https://www.chess.com/variants/fog-of-war/game/65294684/29/3 and saw on white's 15th move the queen take on d5 for a split second.

Has anyone else seen this before? Does Chess.com know about this? I feel like we'll need to fix the bugs if variants are to be taken more seriously. Thanks

The problem is chesscom doesn't care about variants

Seirawan Chess: a very serious bug (eighth piece problem)

In the chess dot com version of Seirawan Chess, you CAN'T drop one of the extra pieces when you have just moved the LAST of your not-yet-moved regular pieces (that is the eighth piece, or seventh-and-eighth if it's castling).

So, the current de facto ruleset for Seirawan Chess on chess dot com is different from the official Seirawan Chess ruleset!
I have tested it again and again, so that I am quite sure.
I used the "Analysis" mode on chess dot com, where I can make both white's and black's moves (today, 9 May 2024).

Some more details (all the following parameters are IRRELEVANT):
- if the player has already dropped one of the two special pieces, the other one remains out of play
- if the player has dropped no special piece yet, they both remain out of play
- it's the same for white and black
- the last unmoved piece may be any piece (KQRNB)
- that move may be a capture
- that move may be a get-out-of-check move
- that move may be castling (O-O or O-O-O)
- it may be a game with no castling at all

As for the official Seirawan Chess ruleset, www.seirawanchess.com reads:
"
Since each side has eight pieces (K, Q, R, R, B, B, N, N), a player has eight opportunities to bring the Hawk and Elephant into play. If a player fails to do so, the unplaced piece remains out of play.
"

On other websites (different wording for the same principle):
"
As a consequence of these rules, a player has no more than eight opportunities to drop the extra pieces onto the board. If he fails to make use of these opportunities, the pieces will remain out of play for the rest of the game.
"

I tested the "eighth piece problem" with Seirawan Chess on

- PyChess

- seirawanchess.appspot.com/Seirawan_chess.html
and they work all right. The "eighth piece problem" seems to be nothing else than a chess dot com problem/bug! (... alternate rule?!)

"Chess.com Launches Duck Chess, Seirawan Chess, Setup Chess" in October 2022, but nobody has noticed this problem yet?
... It made me lose more than one rated games. :-)

Will the bug that the server automatically makes the first move for you in a bullet game when there is a slight lag ever be fixed? I cannot find my old post, so I have to repost.

It happened to me also (in today’s WoF The Lottery)

Yes, I see this every game. I have posted in this thread, I don't know how many times now, I lost count of how many times I complained about the bugs in Fog of War.

I see the pieces flash briefly when either the opponent takes a piece of mine - say for example one of their pawns takes mine, but there was 2 of their pawns that could have taken it, I can see the movement of *which* pawn took it, when sometimes it should not be known to me which one did it. Like there is some animation of the left pawn moving diagonally to the right, or vice versa.

Also I see the issue you are mentioning when the pieces flash, often this is when an opponent piece parks in front of one of my pawns, and the square turns black - it could be any piece, but sometimes I get a flash and see what piece it was, even when replaying the moves. Or when an opponent takes one of my pieces. There is a brief milisecond where you see what that piece was.

What is more frustrating is, the game used to work perfectly well, then, about a year ago (?) - I don't remember, someone changed something, and the game got all these bugs.

It was the same that the *fogged* squares changed from just grey/black to looking like actual 'fog'

Bare piece rule doesn’t work in analysis.

@oatey, thank you for reporting this. It's a known issue that persists for a long time indeed which is quite frustrating. It's a side effect of fixing a lot of other important bugs and so far it's been challenging to get it fixed. We're working in this direction and are absolutely looking to fix the fog millisecond-blink issue in the near future.

I cant place my king on the final move in https://www.chess.com/variants/custom/game/66570758

In that Setup variant, players can drop pieces on the first 3 ranks, but blue only sees ranks from to 4 to 11. Just change blue to yellow.

A 2450+ anon 4pc game I was winning just disappeared from the view and doesn't appear on the archive and my rating wasn't updated when we got to the end of the game; what happened?
