To improve in chess, your approach should be customized to your level of experience and knowledge of the game, but in general i think that practicing checkmate patterns and working to correct your mistakes by analysis of your own games is a helpful training approach at any level of play.
According to my own experience, i would have to add as well that you should take care not getting obssessed with the game by playing more than it's not healthy or entertaining. Recognize when you're tired and resume your practice with a clear focus and goal in mind.
