Here is the place that we can comment about our training games. How we can use them, analysis during the game, after the game, ideas on how to better the format...

knightLite

knightLite vs Supergamer; This is a great opening to study a little about, I have had a couple of games recently with this opening. The first one was a total disaster for me as white after blundering my queen away. The second one is shown here at this link where my opponent used his Queen to take the pawn and kept it out prematurely.

I do not think there is anything wrong with this opening other than it can lead to some complex positions.

supergamer

I'm not so sure I played this opening right in my game against knightlite. Here is the first seven moves of our game, and MY explanation of MY moves.

killthequeen

Hmmm. Marshall Defence. Very interesting but much tempo is lost. Very elegant trap KnightLite

knightLite

supergamer I agree that this opening has a few traps in it and it is easy to get flustered. I accidentally played it by moving my knight out before 3.... e6 in the QGD, which is what I usually play. Then 4. cxd4 exd4 and all is well.  I got so flustered I lost my queen in a couple more moves. However if played correctly the opening is sound enough.

The problem with the opening, if allowed, is that the queen or the knight is chased around losing tempos (as killthequeen stated). supergamer's queen is currently being chased around the board and if he's not careful he may lose it. One of the basic principles in chess is that you shouldn't bring the queen out too early unless it has a definate and secure mission; the queen is too important to get caught in the crossfire.

supergamer

Here is the rest of my game v.s. knightlite. I think its obvious to state that knightlite has the upper hand...

knightLite

Thank you supergamer for your narrative. This is exactly what this group was created for, learning!!

Simple development with the aim of attacking the advanced d5 pawn, instead of the premature Queen maneuver, would have kept black in the game.

You did have a great point though supergamer. Sometimes your opponant chases your Queen around with no real threats or progressive development. Then your opponent has wasted as many or more tempo as you and possibly compromised his position beyond repair.

TomR

oh how I hate it when I don't realise my opponent can pull that rook king fork.

killthequeen

It happens heaps. At my interschool tournament I watch some matches and those forks are left open, and neither players see the move. It is a trick that a lot of players that are slightly better in my town are aware of though!

jimthemagic

So if this really is for analysis during training games as well, here is one TG of mine against knightLite. He has been helping me on King's Indian Defence lately and here is another favorite of mine. This could have gone under "Attack the Queen" easily if I hadn't been careful in the beginning, but the game is still going on at

Looking forward to my blunders and please do me a favor and point out the ones you can find there. It's Scandinavian Defence and I shall attach some notes which I have been making during the game.

Plan to practise here my Scandinavian Defence by playing 1. e4 1....d5 2. exd5 2....Qxd5 3. Nc3 3....Qa5 4. d4 4....c6 5. Bd2 5....Qc7!?

Instead of 4. d4 white played 4. Nf3 and I wasn't familiar with it at this point.

jimthemagic

Need to be careful here: if 7. Qe2 ,Qe3 or Qe4 then 7....Qxe2, Qxe3 or Qxe4, but if 7. Be2 (which I assume) then I shall play 7....Nc6.

jimthemagic

8. 0-0 8....e6 9. Re1 9....Be6. Now white needs to be a bit careful too.

jimthemagic

10. g3 10....Qa5 11. Ne4 11....Nge7 12. Nxd6+ 12....cxd6 13. c3

knightLite

Yes, white (me) does have to be careful as my rook is unprotected and my c2 square was a target for a rook fork causing many problems for me.

jimthemagic

There are several tricks possible in Scandinavian Defence. The main reason, why I play it, is that many players are not experts in it. Although odds to win are probably not as good as in many Sicilian Openings, but usually the one that knows the opening better tends to get advantage. My games are not on knightLites level and the further the game went the better his play worked against me. As earlier mentioned on both sides carefulness is needed.

killthequeen

I play a lot of blitz chess online and the people that use Scandinavian Defense are usually 1400-1600 is the trend. I now play 1700s and don't see it much but thats probably because i play d4. (Sick of the Sicilian)

jimthemagic

A good point, killthequeen, thank you. In blitz with rating 1400-1600 there are good results possible by using Scandinavian Defence. And in longer games against better opponent I am usually satisfied to get a drawn. Compared to Sicilian Openings I find Scandinavian simplier to handle. When I was studying about ten years ago, someone taught me a kiss rule - keep it simple stupid. Maybe if I'd use it more in my life, I could get better results.

Another point of view of Sicilians: never learned those properly, it's too complicated for me. Just about only time, when I enjoyed it a lot, was the World Championships Karpov vs. Kasparov when Kasparov needed a draw as black, but he won Karpov beautifully. Some players are just so superior in complex variations, that they make their own corrections to opening theory, and it makes me feel very small. It's not just admirable, but it may put me down.

supergamer

here is the first nine moves of a game killthequeen and I are playing. I think I'm handling this one a bit better than the game against knightlite...

killthequeen

Few things:

1. Good luck. You have not splipped catastrophically yet.

2. That formation is called a fianchetto.

3. The bishop taking was kind of forced because other wise b4 would trap it and force a bishop-2pawn exchange

knightLite

I have inserted the computer analysis of the Scandinavian Defense Training Game, also known as the Center Counter Defense, played between myself and jimthemagic. The game is drawn after the middle game was near an ending because the training game was for opening theory.

I would like to hear from our members on some of the moves made that they may have made differently or even what they think about the opening in general.

Please use the play list button on the bottom right corner of the board to see the analysis and review some of the mistakes and blunders to find out why they were mistakes and blunders. It is at the least, interesting, but more than likely you will learn somthing from it.
