Gavin the Gazonapede

Garden Olympics

Chapter One

Today was perfect. The sun shone and everything was peaceful. Baby birds soared in the large blue sky, darting in and out of the fluffy white clouds, and a colourful sunrise bloomed on the horizon. But down below, at the bottom of the garden, Bugsville was busily preparing for an important event: The Garden Olympics!

“Hey, come back Billy!” Gavin the Gazonapede said scuttling after his mate.

“Quick,” Billy called weaving in and out of some green leafy weeds in the back garden. “The Garden Olympics are starting soon, we have to hurry,” he said breathing hard. One of his six legs pushed his long antennae out of his eyes as he ran.

“Where are we going so fast Billy?” Gavin asked chasing after Billy.

“The Garden Olympics Gavin,”

“Oh! Is that today?”

“Yes, right now!” “And we better not be late,” Billy said.

“Why?” Gavin asked hurrying past Billy on his way to the magical wormhole.

“Sara’s already there waiting for us! If we are late she will be angry!” Billy replied catching up to Gavin.

Sometime later Gavin and Billy had reached the outskirts of the magical wormhole. It was the type of transport all the bugs of Bugsville used to get around the garden.

Billy and Gavin ran then jumped into the hole. Air swished around them as they hurtled forward to the other end of the wormhole. “Ouch!” Billy said landing on his blue spotted back, his six legs poking out in all directions.

“Come on, we don’t have all day Billy, I can’t miss the first event it’s my favourite one the insect soccer,” Gavin said dashing past Billy.

Billy was exhausted. “Why is it so far away?” He groaned, plopping down in the dirt. His legs ached and he couldn’t breathe. He glanced at his bug-watch trying to regain his breath.

Gavin hadn’t heard him; he had rushed on ahead eager to get there, then he noticed Billy was missing. Gavin turned around and continued back the way he came. Gavin couldn’t leave Billy behind it was against the motto they lived by “Nobody gets left behind”.

“Where are you Billy?” Gavin called. But there was no reply. He ran down the path they had come looking to every direction to find his friend.

“Billy are you okay?”

“I’m too tired!” Billy coughed.

Finally Gavin found Billy sitting in the dirt exhausted. “I think you need some of Mum’s secret energy boost recipe Billy!” Gavin said pulling out of his pocket a small glass bottle of purple formula. It was a mixture of berries and plants that could restore the energy to a bug. Gavin bent down to Billy and let Billy drink some.

As the purple sweet liquid resembling grape juice slid down Billy’s throat almost instantly Billy was better again.

“Thanks Gavin let’s go!” Billy said as happy as ever.
