Tim – leader, earns and keeps trust of others, good education and great intellect, great heart, will of steel. Blamed himself for lack of success (depended on himself too much for the success of the mission). He could be deceived by a cleverly concealed lie. He was humble and could learn from others easily. He had a “take charge” personality. He would take calculated risks. He had a spiritual background through the influence of his grandparents and was open to believe in a higher power.
Holly – a backbone of steel and a heart of pure gold. Her mind had also been sharpened by the challenges she had faced during her times of testing. They had prepared her to step up and fill the void in leadership left by Tim’s absence. Tim had taught her much but she had taught him even more.. Had several weaknesses, and was too trusting, having trouble discerning the truth from a well-crafted lie. She had a “take charge” personality.
Hope had many weaknesses and could fall apart emotionally at the drop of a hat. She was super sensitive, and the least pain or perceived injury to a person in body, soul, or spirit would elicit a virtual mega-reaction from Hope; and it was virtually impossible for her to hide her feelings. Physically, she was not very strong and had several infirmities. She did not reason well logically, and her poorly developed language skills left created communication difficulties with others. Hope’s greatest strength was that she could discern a lie, no matter how well hidden. It was like having a sixth sense. Hope had a deep confidence in Divine Providence.
Michael was the tallest and strongest, vigilant and cautious. He was great at fixing things and took the initiative when he could see what needed to be done. He had amazing mechanical ability and had a healthy self-confidence. He was willing to step into a new challenge that tested his abilities.
Sarah was sensitive to people and knew what to do to comfort them. She was a calming influence and didn’t get all miffed when the going got rough. She was quick to recognize that there are many things in life that we just have no control over, and she had a deep inner peace that was seldom disturbed.
Courage lived up to her name and never let fear take a hold of her or paralyze her. She was able to take action and step out in faith, believing that things would work out even if she had no idea how this could happen. She was the one most likely to take a leap of faith, but she was not foolhardy or careless.
Nathan had a knack for predicting how things would turn out, almost like a prophet of old. He was one of the wisest in the group and usually gave good advice. He had strong analytical skills, was a team player, and did not seek his own glory.
Jack was quick-witted and could usually lighten the atmosphere with his keen sense of humor, bringing a smile to almost any face. He was also a deep thinker and analyzed things well and thoroughly. He mixed his humor with serious things that were difficult to deal with, making it easier for people to stay engaged and work toward a solution.
Drexel was part of an elite squad of guards and searchers who retained his humanness. He had lost a son who was eliminated from the republic due to his early signs of recalcitrant nonconformity. Drexel took the initiative and sought to please his superiors, but he had a well-concealed compassion for recusants and desired to do what he could to help them. By doing this, he sought to assuage his guilt and atone for his own failures in not standing up to the Republic on behalf of his son whom he loved. He didn’t agree with many of the values of the Republic, but he was a pragmatist and knew of no other way to provide for himself and his family (wife).
Alpha101 – A standard-grade Grinder who had been a recusant before being reprogrammed and forced to become a Grinder. He still retained some broken memory of his past life as a recusant which surfaced from time to time.
Omega101 – A standard-grade Grinder who had accepted his fate and volunteered to become a Grinder. He was reasonably congenial but put himself first and was unlikely to sacrifice for others at the cost of himself.
Keepers – members of the elite ruling class
The Captain – rose from the ranks by simply following the Keepers’ orders; didn’t have an internal moral compass.
The Sergeant – did his job well enough to be promoted. He had a conscience but it was buried by the necessities that were placed upon him. He did not see anything wrong with the job he did.
