IK using engines in puzzle solutions is cheating, but the fact that the OP provided no solution and the NM in chat being unsure lead me to try the position in the chess.com analysis board. It claimed M3 was the best with multiple solutions, but no M2.

@BraydenPlaysWithStyle, do you have a real M2 solution?

I was not really very unsure about Ng2; I know I used the words "may be" but I did pretty much give the checkmate after every possible Black response, so in that sense I couldn't really have been more sure, although my word choice may have been poor.

This puzzle is a nice example of zugzwang, by the way.

This is a M2 puzzle, dude

That was a very smart response, play me on the chess board

I thought the same thing. If the pieces could all stay where they were it would not be a mate in 2, but one piece has to move.

What is interesting is that stockfish cannot find the answer until you try it, then it will recalculate

Yeah! I was amazed when I saw it on the board. I realized once I could move the pieces, it was hard for me to visualize at first.

I would argue that your original message was the 'smart' one. A bit of arrogance there with the smh you added at the end. All I did was let you know what type of puzzle it was, even though OP clearly stated such. Last, if you think beating a ~1350 elo player at your rating will prove something, good for you, I guess.

1.Ng2! after 1...Nc4  then  2.Nf4# if any other move from the knight on e3 then 2.Qb3#  if 1... Ne6 2.Nxe3# if 1...Nxh5 then 2.Qb8# if 1...Ne8 2.Bf7#  if 1...ke6 2.Qd6# if 1...Kc4 2.Nxe3#

VivanJaiswal

I think mate in 3.Qb3+ Nc4
Bf7+ Ne6
Rxf5#

Hmm... I think I had the right answer, yet my answer was down voted. Life in the big city, I guess. At least people that haven't solved it yet, may not see the correct solution. <shrug>

Isn't it mate in 3? Bf7+ Ne6 Rxf5 Nxf5 Qb3#

Is it 1. Nc2/Ng2 Nxc2/Nxg2 2. Qb3#?

That is three moves because Nxc2/Nxg2 is a move so it is three

Uh... no. Ng2 and Nxg2 count as 1 move. 1 move for White and 1 for Black. Also Nc2 is wrong bc Nc4.

the_potmo

ah i see the puzzle was solved already. Good reason for a down vote I guess. Don't know how I missed this. Good job @zexarium! Still think down-voting a correct solution, when almost nobody seemed to have the right idea, seems a bit weird.

After Nc4 there is Qd6#
