Checkmating

Although pretty cool, I would reject all ideas that include a factor of randomness. Chess is traditionally a perfect information game, with no chance events.

It would have to be a totally different variant, and there would be enough randomness that ratings might not be meaningful.  Like a chess version of Mariokart with the frantic settings; the better player will win more often than not, but in any individual game, anything can happen.

2 months ago someone in the chat suggested to add some laser sharks to the board so they zap random pieces. I was inspired by this suggestion  and offered another idea: We should have a huge boss king in the middle of the board taking 4 squares (2x2). Every 10 moves the boss king jumps to some random place and crushes all the pieces below. It can be killed, but it has 5 lives. I believe there were other suggestions too. But my boss king rule is natural. ... For all who used to play arcade games. Do not know why wasn't it tested yet.

The boss king - I actually like my randomly-moving knight better, I think. grin.png  Better hope it doesn't move into the middle of your army... but a piece right next to it is sure to be safe.  And the ability to accidentally move off the board means it shouldn't stick around your army too long, as it will either leave into the middle of the board or go off the board and have a new one start in the middle.

I like the Huge Boss idea, but I would prefer to get rid of the randomness. Is there any way to make the movement of the boss deterministic? Here are some ideas:

1) He is attracted to queens. Move your queen in a square not very far away, and the boss will make a step towards the queen. This means that to move the boss towards the enemy you must put your queen close to the enemy.

2) He is repulsed by queens. Move your queen is a square near the boss, and the boss will make a step to the opposite direction. Warning! We may face angry protests by feminists! grin.png

3) He is moved after player's votes. In every round each player votes for a direction (left/right/up/down/blank), and at the end of the round the boss will move one square towards the direction voted by the majority (horizontally, vertically or diagonally). Or will not move at all if the votes are cancelling each other. Players can pre-vote, while another player's clock is ticking, to avoid slowing down the tempo of the game.

The queen driven moves seems to be logical. Both towards the queen and to the opposite direction.

Did not think we will seriously discuss the boss king. However, if it is going to be tested then the boss should not move to the cross "wings". He should be moving inside the square and not going to the 3 first and last files and ranks of the board.

The boss can move towards the strongest army king. The boss can run away from a player which sacrificed his piece to attack the king (to take 1 of his lives). Well, enough for now.
