Just want to refresh what i've shared here last 27th April 2010 during the height of the 2010 World Chess Championship !

http://www.chess.com/groups/forumview/chess-coach-for-wesley?page=7

...
:D

The ongoing Anand-Topalov World Championship match-up! See how they both had prepared for this tourney!

In addition to their respective computers & self/individual studies/preparations ... they have batteries of Seconds (or coaches) ... and these seconds are their respective secret weapons (na ayaw nga ni Anand ipaalam kong sino-sino sila up to the last minute)!

Therefore, assuming Anand & Topalov ... if both are of equal in strength & skill ... their respective seconds or coaches ... could make or settle the difference! Take out these coaches/seconds to any one of them ... the one with a topnotched coach/seconds will for sure end up as the champion!

...
:D

Now, after winning the 2010 World Chess Championship (WCC) ... Anand finally had completely revealed them ... and his secret weapons in addition to his batteries of seconds were:

1. Kasparov
2. Kramnik
3. Carlsen

And World Champion Anand had said ...

"Yes, my human cluster was actually fairly impressive !!!"

112 Core Computer Cluster VS Human Cluster ... Who Prevailed ???

19.05.2010 – The team of World Championship challenger Veselin Topalov reportedly spent a large sum of money to secure a 112 core computer cluster running at mind boggling speed. "How did the reigning champion counter this awesome hardware advantage," we asked. Anand answered this question in a candid and very detailed interview broadcast on Monday Playchess. He used a human cluster!

additionally ...

17.05.2010 – There are rumours that the team of World Championship Challenger Veselin Topalov spent 100,000 Euros to secure a 112 core computer cluster, with the latest Rybka 4 program exclusively reserved for their use until the end of the match. How did the reigning champion Viswanathan Anand counter this awesome hardware advantage of the opponent.

This is what a computer cluster looks like – with just 52 cores. Topalov's had 112.

The story is that the Topalov team had access to four twelve-core machines and eight eight-core systems all connected into a cluster of 112 processors. This awesome hardware was running a cluster version of Rybka 4 that was not available to anyone else.

We don't have direct access to information right now bro mysql ... unlike b4 bro SugarDom there !

The last word from SugarDom then was ... July ... before a European tournament that Wesley will be participating. Now it appears that is the ... July 18 - 28 : "Young Grandmaster Tournament" Biel-Bienne 43rd Int'nl Chess Festival : Switzerland!

Hope it's a GO now & funding is already available!

As per Wesley kibitz, he feels the chess coach can wait...

Like i was saying, we don't need super mega power computer. Just a fast enough computer will do. Because at the end of the day you still have to put all that analysis and lines in your head...

I asked Wesley whether he is ahead or behind the iron chef computer, and he said he is behind. Meaning it is adequate...but like i said i am already planning for the next iron chef, but it's not going to be a cluster like Topalov's, just enhanced off-the-shelf staff....

And by the way Our Wesley Engine is better than Rybka 3, Fire 1.3 64-bit. I don't know if that is better than Rybka 4. I think it's time for another match with Zanshin. He's buying the Rybka 4.

I think Bro SugarDom ... the real problem behind the scene why Wes don't have a coach till now is ... we don't have somebody to "Champion for a cause of Wesley So" right now who is really concerned of getting a coach for Wesley!

To most student or player like Wes (of course that includes us based on experience) ... if you ask him if he needs one ... would say ... he is satisfied with what he have right now ... but in reality once he will be exposed to the proper rudiment of training from one of world class coaches ... he will experience new things & would say he wants more of it !  kasi hindi nya pa na experience ang tamang training for a world class athlete like him ... and also a world class training from a world class coach like former world champion GM Susan Polgar!

So many of us who had undergone various types of training in our own field of training ... na akala natin sufficient na yong mga nakaraan na training only to realize later na marami pa pala tayong hindi alam. saka lang naman natin ito ma realize kong tayo ay ma expose sa mga training na ito. ganon din yan kay Wesley hindi pa siya na expose sa kind of training na tinatamasa ngayon ng mga young players like Carlsen, Karjakin, Nepo, Caruana & the rest ... who all had attributed their rise to their respective coaches.  saka napabilis ang attainment & accomplishment nila because of their coaches.

Isang problem pa na nakita ko dyan ay ... seems nobody made a written request for the training fund ... kaya walang na approve na training fund. kasi sa Phil gov't system ... you need to prepare in writing (in advance pa) your letter request (hindi lang verbally) & justify the need for the funding in writing. dito kadalasan ang pagkukulang natin ! Hindi naman kaya ito ang dahilan kong bakit hindi natuloy?

Kung kailangang bawasan and sacrifice one tournament to prioritize a week or two of training why not ???  To me it's one step backward and three or more steps forward (a jump) later with  a proper training.

what do i mean by this is ... not to be just satisfied earning +4.1 or 4.9 ELO points in one tournament ... but rather to skip one and undergo the training & earn a +10 or +14 (like Caruana & Giri) the next tournament & onward! Same too with the earnings ... coz a sterling performance in one or more tournaments will open doors to more lucrative invitations from prestigious/elite tournaments worldwide. Time is the essence here ... we strike while the Iron is hot.

One potent example of having a great coach ... is Manny Pacquiao !

Once a single dimensional fighter (that he was before) Manny Pacquiao was converted into a multi dimensional fighter & was never the same again with Freddie Roach as coach!

Before, Manny was already satisfied having Buboy Fernandez as coach and so with coach "Ben" Benedicto Delgado, who guided Pacquiao to a world title back in 2001..

But between Coaches Ben, Buboy & Manny's other previous coaches that handled him ... Coach Freddie Roach made a "Great Difference" for Manny !

...

Same thing during the heydays of Coach Ron Jacobs of Northern Consolidated Cement basketball team

Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco, Jr.. hired him as head coach of the Philippine basketball Team.

Jacobs brought the Philippines back to prominence in basketball during the 80's and is the last head coach of the Philippine National Basketball team to have a winning record against the Chinese National Basketball team.

As a basketball coach, Jacobs revolutionized the way basketball was played in the Philippines. He raised the level of technology in playing the game and turned every contest into a learning experience by showing how to win with science, hard work, team play and discipline.

...

And these can be said too ... about the 9 World's Top Juniors (Chess) who have great coaches ...

pls read hereat:

Wesley So, the only player w/o a coach among the World’s Top 10 Juniors

http://www.gmwesleyso.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=150:wesley-so-the-only-player-wo-a-coach-among-the-worlds-top-10-juniors&catid=38:featured-article&Itemid=64

lastly, i do want to re-iterate this ...

"As to what level of success we expect of him to progress soonest … will also largely be dependent on the level of coach/trainer this country could provide him!"

BTW, Bro SugarDom ... according to Bro Pulsar @ chessgames ...

...

Jun-09-10

pulsar: According to a source, ABoGMs is a no go. We'll see...

...

if this would be the case ... i suggest that you call ASAP Wes' father (Mr William)  to arrange right away Wesley Training with GM Susan Polgar inplace of the Asian BOGM.  If they need assistance from me re drafting of the letter request for the funding (PSC/NCFP) they could just call me up, inform me or kibitz here @ CC or @ chessgames.

Bro joeyj, medyo complicated eh. magpapacoach din si Wesley, pero hindi pa ngayon. Mamimili pa si Wesley ng ibang pangalan....

Avatar of joeyj

Sa akin lang kasi ... it's a great opportunity (saka libre kasi) for Wesley to train with Susan Polgar considering she has a World Championship experience & a World Class caliber player/trainer/coach & FIDE's accredited "Senior Trainer" ... saka assisted pa naman sya ng husband nya Paul Truong also a coach/trainer! Husband & Wife team-up in coaching plus their experiences to share is something to consider that you could not avail anywhere else!

Together they had brought Texas Tech U  from nowhere to 3rd Place in the U.S. Collegiate Team Chess Championship with only 3 IMs (No GMs unlike other teams) in its line-up.  And and as mentioned by Susan herself ... “No other team has made it to the Final Four in its first try".

Another thing is ... Susan had been monitoring Wesley's progress & I believe marami na syang remedies/solutions to share sa mga weaknesses ni Wesley! Saka yong opportunity din ni Wesley to get college scholarship thereat with Susan's guidance.

heto kasi ang nasabi ni Susan ...

Wesley, "need some assistance in maximizing his natural strength, while improving on various weaknesses of his games ... that Rybka or Fritz cannot teach him".

I will not mention it here because I do not want their opponents to exploit it. However, I will do my best to give him advice to work on his own to improve on various key areas”.

His game just needs some small tweaking.” ... Susan Polgar

...

Furthermore, Wesley could avail later on training from other World Class Coaches/Trainors as opportunity comes.  From one level to the next level.  Maganda na rin mayron na syang nasimulan na worldclass type of training ... para next level of training na uli the next time.

Congratulations Los Angeles Lakers ... 2010 NBA Champion !!!

Congratulations Phil Jackson ... the Best NBA Coach  !!!

...

Coach Phil Jackson ... just an example and to drive a point ... the importance of having a "great" coach. What he did as head coach of Chicago Bulls winning six NBA Titles & now with LA Lakers winning five NBA titles ... a total of 11 NBA Championship is something !!!

In chess, what exactly is the difference between a coach and a trainer? In basketball, we can easily see what a coach can do DURING the game. In chess, however, the player is on his own during the game. But he trains before and after the game. So maybe there's no need for coaching in chess?

Avatar of BW-SugarDom

Besides the computer, Wesley is getting a lot of "coaching" from his wide array of books and chess literature...

I think it's time to revive this topic once more!
