For most of his career, Fischer was a predictable player. He almost never surprised his opponents in the openings, but his extensive knowledge allowed him to outplay even very well prepared opponents. Imagine knowing exactly what your opponent is going to play and still being completely powerless against their expertise—that’s the magic Fischer brought to the board. The Sicilian Defense is one of the openings where Fischer shined the most. He turned what is already a sharp and dynamic defense into a weapon of destruction, especially in this Pelikan and Sveshnikov variation.
