Chess960 WL2023 Divisions

The 2023 season of the Chess960 World League will be getting underway shortly, in the second half of this month.  

A few reminders for everyone to be aware of:

1. As last year, we will be strictly enforcing start times. Matches need to have the scheduled start time set, and the required participation needs to have been met by that time so that matches can start automatically at the day and time scheduled for the round.
2. Divisions A, B, C will be played in a round robin format, and divisions D and E will be played in a Swiss System format.
3. Players are only allowed to play official Chess960 World League matches for 1 team each season and will have their match scores adjusted if they violate this rule multiple times. A player can choose to play for a different team in Chess960 World League 2023 than he does in World League 2023, but the recommendation clearly is to play for the same team in all leagues for simplicity.
4. All closed accounts will continue to be included in the match score adjustments.

Here are the divisions based on the Chess960 WL2022 standings as of Jan 1, 2023, which are also shown briefly on the left side of the table below.  Please note that these are not the final standings for the 2022 season, just the interim standings used for setting the divisions this season.  Final standings for 2022 will be announced when all matches have a decisive result.

A couple of notes on the divisions:

1. Two teams have dropped out of the top divisions, so there are much less relegations this time.
2. Participation has kept playing a role in decisions about promotions. It was used to pick the team to promote in the tie for third place in Division C, and for the third promotion from Division D.

Why Team Bulgaria is relegated from division A to division B, while Ukraine is behind us?

Due to the ongoing aggression war, Team Ukraine played only one game. I think it is normal to freeze its place until better times arrive and aggression stops.

This is understood, however have their admins claimed they will play in 2023? If not, division is again 9 teams, while we are relegated.

Fortunately, they have already started playing again in the WL for now. Let us wish them all the best that they have a chance to keep doing so
