It never occurred to me that players would be offended by being offered conditional moves until I read a players profile where he warned that he offers conditionals moves and asked that his opponents not take offence. Conditional moves are not without risk, as I have made mistakes that way, but for forced moves they do make sense.
Conditional moves.
I don't see a problem with conditional moves. I have made conditional moves with as many as 10 forced moves. I never saw any of the moves I made because the opponent made all the forced moves. He could have resigned.
I didn't make them because I was in a hurry. I made the because I found that variation and if I came back in three days I probably have to look for the moves again and again and again.
If someone uses a conditional move on me I really don't care, the games moves along faster. Not that I am in a hurry. Unless I have to go bowling.

So, I've heard different opinions from players I respect, so I guess I'll try not to be annoyed by this type of play. But for myself, I guess I'll just be old fashioned.
old fashion ? if you were old fashion we would be pushing wood; which I prefer. it would be like over the board and your opponent reacts quikly in respnce to your move. Maybe he knows all the continuations triggered by your play? its the same thing as the conditional move. the threat is there. and is not chess founded on threats?
I don't feel intimidated. I feel that my opponent should use it against whenever I expect it and they are forced moves. Even when there is no forced moves I use it putting in moves is several variations.
I just put in three moves in a game against Germany. Now I wait and see if the position changed by three moves when I see the game again.
As far as threats I like them but not against me.

This is not a conditional move by the way.
Its from the heart.

I used to play chess at the local senior center, there were three Russian older player that would come every Wednesday. They would take their time thinking and making the moves.
When I would play while they were thinking I would think of my next move if they made such a move. I would think maybe three of their p o possible moves . . . They would reach slowly for the piece to move, grasp it and slowly place jt on the location and let it go. I would immediately reached and made my move. . . . That was my conditional move I had thought of while they were thinking. . . . .Well eventually the three Russians stopped playing me . . .
When I asked them why they wouldn't play me they said, "You move too fast" . . .
If I ever played them I had to sit and pretend I was thinking for several minutes, that made them happy even though they lost . . . .

I've read a number of comments on this topic, but I find most of them unconvincing. Those in favor generally say it saves time. Others feel it is an aspect of the game; a way to intimidate your opponent. On the first point, I wonder why one plays a two or three or even 7 days game if they are in some kind of hurry. You can get a 2 minute game if you like. I con understand their use in the old postal games, when play was circumscribed by delivery on mail, but that makes no sense to me in online games. Intimidation might be a factor, but I see it as more of an annoyance. Why is this person in such a hurry? Anyway, speaking only for myself, It degrades my enjoyment of the game, so I generally block those who chose this venue.
