It depends for me. I am okay at bullet/blitz chess online, but I get anxious and blunder OTB on short time controls. However, I'm better OTB in longer time controls because I am usually more focused. I am also far better at live than correspondence chess because in correspondence, I don't have the moves fresh in my mind. I suppose these factors primarily affect me psychologically, which in turn affects my chess playing.

If there's a repetitive, annoying noise in the background, no matter how loud or soft, I cannot concentrate at all. This plagues me at OTB tournaments.

For some reason, when i play late into the night and I begin to grow tired, my level of play often reaches it's highest. I will suddely understand everything and play the best moves. I will immediately see the structure of pawns and peculiarity of the pieces and play with no hesitation, until, eventually, I grow so tired, I cannot play well anymore.

drinking a lot of water seems to improve my ability to think, and therefor play a better game of chess....also making sure to focus only on the game, and not eat or answer the phone ....just pure concentration...posssibly a little classical music helps, on low volume...:P

My ability to play good chess very clearly depends on getting enough sleep, and I will play a bit weaker also if it is a day where I feel especially tired or exhausted from my job.

After years of observation, I can guarantee that ageing is the most important factor against getting better in playing chess...

Well chess is like other sports, you have have favourable conditions. I've now been ill and by that having time to play online chess more as much as I like, Unfortuneately loosing 100 in online rating in ten days as I'm not on My top ability , to say the least. Had a sequence when blundering away three games after each other. Normaly I hold a blunder rating of about a blunder a week. (Still a little cloudy so not sure if entirely O T).

Internal and external factors such as energy level, sleep, confidence, distractions in surroundings, and sometimes opponent's behavior. However, once I get on a "flow" I do play good chess in spite of distractions. This is also true with my creative writing - I can write some of my best works in the busiest fastfood joint, but I can also sometimes be restless even in the quietest café. That's why discipline is important to keep performance at a good level in spite of external factors.
