True, better moves probably exist.

There's another principled move he has not yet thought of... Let's see if he can find it.

Avatar of mjharris77

Given he only has 12 hours left to move, which will take him to about noon, I doubt it. Let's hope he doesn't time out.

Avatar of WilliamShookspear

Indeed. He's commented recently so hopefully he will come back soon.

True. But it's now past midnight, so he might be asleep.

I’ll go with Bg5 but what would you do here, William?

The other principled move is Nc3. This follows the old adage "knights before bishops", which is based on the principle that knights move more slowly than do bishops. But in this position, the two basically transpose into each other.

Yeah, nothing very interesting yet

Kieran will probably time out. He only has about 12 hours left and I think he's currently on holiday.

He should have put his game on vacation

Hi guys, I’m thinking Ne5, apparnelty this is a bad move but I can’t see why?

Avatar of mjharris77

I too can't see exactly why it is bad other than there are no games played with Ne5, and Stockfish says it heavily favours black.

Avatar of WilliamShookspear

Ne5 breaks the rule that you don't usually want to move the same piece more than once in the opening. Getting other pieces developed and getting castled should be your main priority.

Your Bishop on f1 will continue to be sad until you play e2-e3. Which you've done happy.png

Thanks for the analysis. Kieran didn't know what to play, I told him the most common move here is Rc1, but didn't know why. I advised against his suggestion of cxd5 since he needn't open up the position when he's not yet under threat, or down on material. Qd2 with the intention of castling.

I've had 8. cxd5 played against me a few times, it is also reasonable. I think that's a chess misconception we've uncovered; it is not always fallacious to open up the position when not under threat. In fact, I think you've got some of that backwards; you want to close the position when you're down material in general; that way, you're trying to make his extra stuff count for less!

Yeh, Rc1 is simply activating the rook, and placing it on a file that most often ends up open.

Avatar of mjharris77

Well I'm not good at a lot of openings, Queens Gambit is one of them!

Avatar of WilliamShookspear

No stress; Qd2 is a reasonable move, and openings don't really matter until you get to 1600 - 1700.

Hi guys, I’m thinking h5 to start a pawn attack but I’m not confident on what the best move is. Any advice?
