Like many others, I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Daniel Naroditsky in person, but either way he was a true inspiration for me. I used to be an avid viewer of GothamChess because of how funny he is, but after I landed on the goldmine of Naroditsky’s youtube channel I just couldn’t stop watching. I genuinely cannot understate how useful his educational content was, in fact he is one of the main reasons that I was able to peak at 2500 blitz on chess.com. So for people thinking that his channel is just for beginners, you are simply wrong. Honestly, I think even grandmasters can learn things from his channel.

But beyond his youtube channel, I loved his commentary. Just from the way he talked and the words he used to articulate himself were things that I’ve never seen in any other chess player. It’s obvious to me that he has a contagious passion for the game, and for teaching chess to others. One of my favorite matches that he commentated was the Hikaru vs. Hans match in the SCC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqQ9wgKEaKg . Him and Robert Hess were a crazy duo and probably the best for chess commentary, they were so good that I’ve even had non-chess friends say they sometimes watch them live even if they don’t understand what is happening on the board. It’s incredibly unfortunate that we will never see this duo again.

Even though I’ve never been to the Charlotte Chess Center, I know how much that place meant to Danya and it was basically his second home. I’ve watched many videos of him coaching there and you could see how beloved he was to the kids there. So that’s why I want to donate to them because they’re one of the communities who have been most affected by his passing, I hope that the money will allow them to continue supporting these kids and continuing Danya’s mission of spreading chess to everyone.

If you believe in what Danya stood for and in my mission, please consider playing in my tournament series (no entry fee) and writing a post here to honor his memory.

Daniel Naroditsky was one of those rare people who made chess feel human. I didn’t start watching him because he was famous, I started because he made every video feel like a conversation. He talked about how he thought about positions, what scared him, what surprised him, and how even grandmasters blunder sometimes. This is a quality that I barely see in many chess youtubers, maybe only Hikaru and even that not so much. That honesty really stuck with me. He made it okay to admit that chess is hard, that improvement takes time, and that passion matters more than perfection.

What I loved most was how Danya made chess fun again. When he streamed late at night, his calm voice and sense of humor made me want to stay up just to keep watching even if I wasn’t getting anything out of it. He had this way of making you feel like he was rooting for you personally, like every lesson was meant to help you get better, not to show how smart he was. I remember watching his “Speedrun to 2000” series and I realized I was into my 6th hour of watching him, honestly it was because it reminded me how much I loved the game in the first place.

For me, Danya wasn’t just a chess player. He was the heart of the chess community online, the kind of person who made people care, even if they didn’t play. I had a lot of friends who watched who weren’t that super into chess but just because he had those great vibes about him.
