Database Library / Overview in SCID

I have been comparing Chessbase and SCID on and off, and so far I am sticking to SCID actually because I like the Interface better. Chessbase opens new windows for everything. SCID's way of doing this as kind of tabs that you can move where you want appears more user-friendly.

Still there is one feature that chessbase has and I thought I had seen in Videos of the original SCID (nod SCID vs PC):
When you open chessbase it shows you an overview of all the databases you have ever opened (if you did not remove them from that view again).

In SCID I have to open my database every time by navigating to them with the file explorer.
I wonder if the feature is somewhere and I just overlooked it, but I cannot find it in any menu or window. Yes, I can give a custom Icon to every database. But SCID does not remember where it opened the database from.

Maybe this would be a feature request I should communicate to the programmer if it is indeed not there. It would close another gap to Chessbase and improve the ease of use a lot.

I believe "Bookmarks" will satisfy what you want to do.

Thanks for the tip. Bookmarks makes it a bit more usable. Though one can only bookmark games, not Databases, it opens the database with the game.

As one can organize the bookmarks into folders, the folder can have the name of the database, and we are quite close: http://screencast.com/t/wA2hOW1p

In the File menu there is a list of recently opened databases but I think that is all there is.

The list in the file menu is helpful but temporary as the latest db opened will roll the oldest off the bottom of the list.

The Bookmarks menu will display the name of the Database but it will also display the name of a game, which I find annoying. When the bookmark is created it will select the game at the top of the list or whichever game is current.

For example, I keep databases of the example games in chess books and I want a simple name displayed in the Bookmarks Menu. So I will create an extra game leaving the information blank or use symbols so that it will sort to the top of the list and that way the menu display is cleaner.

I also use the [Round], [Event], and [Site] to indicate [Author], [Game #], and [Page #] so I can sort the list by those items.

I have never cared much for ChessBase and have always prefered SCID.

If you edit the bookmarks, you can remove the game name from the bookmark. This is a cosmetic thing only (the same game will still be opened, just not shown), so it's maybe not satisfactory. Maybe also have a look at what the "finder" does.

@stevenaaus - Wow, that works great. Such a simple thing and I didn't realize it. Embarassed That really cleans up the bookmarks menu. Thanks!

If you modify the game that the database is bookmarked to your bookmark will have to be reset
