Deep Green gets a face-lift

No, not me - the iPhone app.  :)

I just downloaded the 1.1 version of Deep Green & it clearly adds more personality and polish to what I think has long been the most polished (and personable) of all the iPhone chess apps.  If you've never used it, it's hard to imagine how much more smooth and stylish it is than the competition - but if iPhones came with a built-in standard 'bundle' of apps, this would certainly be the one to pick for a chess game.  (See link below.)

Having said that, it doesn't have many of the features that serious chessers might want:  You can't yet export your games via email.  It doesn't announce openings.  It doesn't show analysis.  But if you want a slick looking & enjoyable app with which to pound out a casual game of chess on the train, I think Deep Green will make you very happy.

New in .1 is a great new set of analog sounds (including special sounds for check, checkmate, promotion, etc.), new animations, "callouts" (little speech bubbles that allow the pieces to 'speak,' announcing check, etc.), a Help system, an auto-rotate feature that makes 2-human games a snap, and more.

Check out this page for more information, and look at some of the demos you can run on the virtual iPhone to the right of the page; it will give you a good sense of Deep Green's game-play and sense of fun.

Cheers

EDIT:  A little birdie (that's pretty much always a metaphor for Twitter now, right?) told me that the forthcoming 2.0 version of DG will offer support for multiple games, PGN, correspondence chess, copy/paste (PGN, FEN)...  Niiice.

And what about the AI? better levels than shredder?

Avatar of DeepGreene

It's got ten levels - the first three throttle the engine's ability to think to varying degrees, but in general it's all about limiting the think-time.  Level 10 allows the engine to think 30 seconds per move.

It was informally rated around 2000 Elo in its earlier incarnation (on the Apple Newton!), but I have no idea how that relates to the muscle of the iPhone hardware/version.  It plays an enjoyable game, and I find it challenging even at only 1 second...  but I'm not Shredder.  :)

thanks Deep! I´m a chess program maniac but at the end I always use the same: Glaurung because its style, and Shredder because its adaptative AI. I was thinking on Deep Green because its lay out. I will probably wait to version 2 with all those new functions you talked about. Thanks for the review!

This blog post is an interesting account of how Deep Green got its current sound effects:

For some, the idea of sound for a chess app may seem a bit superfluous, but I quite like this aspect of the app - probably because it was so thoughtfully implemented.  I think the post reveals a lot about why this app has a real 'quality' feel about it - not just in respect to its sounds.

Cheers
