I use mainly e4(aka P-K4) openings as white, but ever since I started attending chattanooga chess club I have become more intune with what I used to refer to as the opening that killed me, d4(aka P-Q4). The reason I have adapted to d4 is because the top players at the club, class A and Expert level players, will typically use d4 opening variations.
Inorder to get to the endgame I had to adapt to playing black against a queens gambit. Normally I responded to the gambit with a queens gambit declined variation, but from what an expert has taught me, a queens gambit accepted is more efficent.
I digress, I will now continue with the question. Is there a clear definable difference gameplay wise of the two openings? I understand generaly understand what types of games will arise from either first move, but can the difference in the two openings be difined through comparison?
My take on the whole matter is as follows.
The move e4 is starting move that often than not leads to simple open positions where big tactics are a common occurance and games can be very close or won early, and thats why the e4 opening is always called the tactical opening.
The move d4 commonly leads to complex closed positions where big tactics can be found within large amounts of calculating and games can end very close or early by a crushing victory.
I've been using Nf3 lately for it's flexibility and transposabilty. I'll start to head toward the Reti but often will transpose into an English opening or the Queen's pawn gambit decined. It easily transposes into more standard e4 and d4 openings.
