I think that your mistake was advancing all the pawns around your king in the first place. Skye’s king was safe and sound while yours was not. Also, the advanced pawns would only make it easier for Skye’s pieces to reach and destroy as your king was still far away. With the rooks and queen bashing your king’s hideout, remember that you must keep your monarch safe! Especially with the ladies around... 😊. Nonetheless, quite a nice game. I can’t believe that it was over so fast. I mean, you’ll started it yesterday!

I think my king was okay until I allowed his queen to come to the party. If I hadn't played ...g6 and ...f5 I would have been stuck defending e4 with my pieces. Also, that's why I'm thinking I should have taken over the g-file before Deirdre did.
Thanks for your input

No problem. you should have taken over that file...but then Skye could still have easily defended and won. Also, your pushing pawns wasn’t very smart, but what else could you have done? I’m not sure, so pretty good game!

Part of becoming a good player is learning the rules, what to do and not to do. It's good you saw my exposed king as a weakness.
But then when you start getting better you see that it looks scary but the only way in for White is along the g-file, which I can hold. So my king is not such a concern until I open lines to it. (As I foolishly did with 30... f4?)

Quite insightful and instructive, thanks.
I didn't see 8...Bg4 as a mistake, but now you've shown me that perhaps a different move is on the menu.
I was pretty sure I could hold after 21...Qd7. Your bishop was more active but I maintain that Black has the worse side of a draw. My biggest problem was that I couldn't decide on a plan from here.
Ultimately, I'm pretty happy with this game, and I have learned from the loss. (Also, is it just my pride or are you a little bit underrated with your 39 wins and 1 draw out of 40 rated games? )

I am not sure if I am underrated or overrated. I didn't play a single game the last 16 years(I was 2200 rated OTB when I stopped chess) until one year ago when I joined chess.com and that can really ruin your skills. With an analysis board and trying the lines I am decent . If I try to calculate I am bad, especially in 2d calculation. In real board I am slightly better. In some recent friendly games I was able to draw a very promising young 2000 player but nothing more than that. I was more or less struggling in both games.
Well, it certainly sounds and seems as if you've got the mindset knowledge to be very strong, even if you are out of practice. Just curious. (It does lift my spirits that your last otb rating was 2200. Call me vain )
I find my 2D calculation is okay, it's 3D that can be a bit croggling. (I play once every Thursday OTB, but that's not enough to get "broken in" so to speak. Have a chess set at home, but it's small.)

Get a good board and study on it. That will improve your calculation.
You certainly seem that you can play good chess. I would says that your performance in our last game must be close to 1900 but one game is not enough. You have to be consistent.
Yeah, I've been flip-flopping about getting a proper board. Going to go for it. (A magnetic little travel set is okay but not my favourite study board.)
Thanks, that's very kind of you! I have studied the Giuoco in some detail for both sides and so I knew some of what I should be planning. However, check out my blog and you will see just how consistent I am... That's part of what I'm trying to work on.

If you want to play OTB then there is no debate. You need to study on a real board. When I said "good board" I didn't mean anything fancy. I meant good size. You need a normal FIDE board with either plastic or wooden pieces.
My mind is made now. Thanks for your insights!

Hey Deirdre, your analysis was really superb to read. At my level most computer analysis isn't super useful to me as (even if I understand a specific move that a computer made in that one instance) as I more so need to understand the underlying motifs and long term ideas behind each decision. So thanks for explaining those ideas. I wish I could comment on this game myself but I'm not sure I have much to add to the analysis. Also just commenting to let you you guys know that I am reading everything that's going on in this group.

Thanks for the encouragement Deirdre. I'll do some an annotation of one of my games soon. And some other peoples too.

Most of my opening/middlegame revolved around playing d6-d5 and stopping him from playing d3-d4, which was a bit one-dimensional. I didn't think where my c6 knight was going for a long while, until after I'd played ...f4 and overextended.
Your commentary was very much appreciated! The knight invasion into f5 was thematic, but I though I was okay, until I saw the lame horse on c6.
Hi all,
Deirdre and I just completed a Daily game. Here's my analysis, with Skye's shortly to follow.
This is one of the better games I think I've played, only crumbling towards the end.
Thoughts? Analysis? I leave it to you.
Cheers,
~Willy
