What is the maximum number of possible moves (per player) in the first four steps of the game?

emi267

1000?

Honza1975

Hm, interesting question. In 1st move there are 20 possibilities. But later depending on which peace was moved can be new possibilities... I am too lazy to try it to count. So I guess 196.

mrfluffypant

Very cool question. I think for white if you dont consider taking pieces its somewhere very close to 189.

tlaili

Lol you're not even close...

tlaili

The number of four-play options per player is 318,979,564,000!

tlaili

Sorry to both players.

mrfluffypant

How is that calculated? cus that doesn't sound right. It would make sense if that was the number of different games after four moves but not the amount of different moves a player can take in 4 turns

tlaili

Because from the second move up there's suddenly the weevan branching out. By the way for the first two moves for this two players - 7000+ I can't remember the exact number.

tlaili

It said in some article about chess.

Honza1975

In First 2 move 7000+? It must be illegal moves counted in.

tlaili

Both moves for both players.

And together it comes four plays, and then there come a lot more beating options. Like this.

Honza1975

Both players.. Isn't it above written per player? happy.png

Honza1975

So or so, awfull number

mrfluffypant

thats 2 moves per player and ur telling me the board could be in 7000 different combinations? Not that 1 player has 7000 possible moves; right?

tlaili

Yes, that's right. It's amazing how complex the game can be. By the way, do you know how many moves the biggest chess problem has been made up of?

tlaili

292 moves!

mrfluffypant

Wow too many moves

Honza1975

I dont think so. My opinion is that biggest chess problem could be solved by one move. Last time I had problem how to play on directors meeting and I solved it by moving next time into another corner.
