Difference between over-the-board USCF tournament ratings and on-line USCF tournament ratings

Is there a difference between over-the-board USCF tournament ratings and on-line USCF tournament ratings?

Or do you just have one rating on the USCF records regardless of whether you play tournaments on-line or OTB in USCF tournaments?

If there is a difference, what is the rationale for the difference?

Pretty sure they are completely different ratings, as OTB tournaments and online chess are completely different.

OTB is a different rating.

There are FIVE separate USCF ratings. Besides online versus over the board, there are different ratings for fast and slow games. There is no question that some people are simply stronger at playing blitz than standard, while others are the opposite. Likewise, the federation distinguishes between the playing conditions for online play and traditional face to face tournaments.

The five ratings are:

  • OTB Regular (slow)
  • OTB Quick
  • OTB Blitz
  • Online Quick
  • Online Rapid

You can only play for your Online Quick and Blitz ratings here on Chess.com.

Personally, I only care about my Regular tournament rating. The other four are secondary. Someone else, who may not be able to play over the board often, might value the online ratings more.
