5. Be3 : White intends to trade off black's active bishop.
9. a5 : Black will no longer have the opportunity to play d4 - d5 after 10. o-o by white.
11. Bb5 : White breaks an opening principle - never move the same piece twice. The move 11. Nxe5 was possible (because of the unprotected bishop on f5).
12. e4 : Black creates a hole on the d5 square.
13. Bd7 : Black breaks an opening principle - never move the same piece twice.
14. Rxf6 : An exchange sacrifice. White gives up the rook, removes black's strongest kingside defender of the d5 pawn, and exploits the weaknesses of the h5-e8 diagonal.
17. Nxd7 : White attempts to lure away black queen from guarding the f6 pawn.
17. Qe7 : Black's best reply. If Qxd7, then Qxf6+ with Qxa8+ on the next move.
