Haven’t run in decades, but in high school I was part of the top team in a strong league in a town that is well respected in the distance running community.

We were disappointed when we failed to repeat as state champions my senior year. The team went downhill from there for several years, but my alma mater had a run of at least eight consecutive state championships that ended about ten years ago and also won Nike Cross Nationals one of those years. My son was on the third team and so I attended the awards banquet when we all got to see the trophy.

My running ended with an injury shortly after high school.

I was one of 20 runners on our team under five minutes in the mile. Track and Field News had an article about us.

My HS coach was the number two runner in his high school behind Gerry Lindgren.

I used to run xc, 26 years and many injuries ago. I basically quit runnin in 2017 because I tore my achilles tendon in 2012 and continued to run on it and agrivate it for 5 years.

Finally, an interesting post...

I'd never run before, but this year I decided to join the xc team at my high school. I'm ranked third against everybody, even senior captains who have been running for 4 years and do indoor (and I'm still a freshman). Currently my pr is eighteen minutes and fifty seconds for a 5k and five twenty for the mile, but the season isn't over yet, so...

When I was in high school, 45 years ago, a bunch of chess players also ran cross country and track.

Many years ago, there were studies done that showed cross country had the highest GPA and college acceptance of all high school sports. That has probably changed over the years.

Wow! At my high school of about 1400 students, I was one of five who broke 5 minutes. My best official time was 4:34, but I once ran a 4:21 for the first mile of a 2 mile race. I died in the second mile and didn’t even break 10 minutes that day. I was usually the third best at my school. But I was a year ahead academically and graduated early.

The cross country coach, Rick Riley, where I coach chess held the national high school mile record in the 1960s. Gerry Lindgren, also a local, stunned the Soviets at the 1964 Olympic games in the distance events.

Don Kardong, founder of our Bloomsday run, was fourth in the Olympic marathon in 1976.

Spokane’s strength in distance running runs deep.

4:21 is impressive! Even 4:34.

I still run. Been doing it for over 40 years since I was a little kid. I had some success. Not as fast now but still faster than most people my age. Lucky to still have no injuries. It helps to do strength training and other cardio too. I don't obsess over race times anymore. The feeling of running is still similar as to when I was in my 20s.
